New Zealand and South Africa locked horns on Sunday evening at the Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui, in the first of the five-match T20I series just a week after the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup ended.

The two teams had last met in the first semi-final of the T20 mega event, where the Kiwis blew the South Africans apart with a 9-wicket win to make it to the final. As the teams faced off with some key players rested, here’s how the series opener panned out, resulting in a Proteas win.

Coetzee-Baartman return in style

Having missed out on the T20 World Cup, the pace bowling duo of Gerald Coetzee and Ottneil Baartman led the bowling attack on their return to international cricket. Coetzee struck in consecutive overs to dismiss New Zealand openers, Devon Conway and Tom Latham and reduced New Zealand to 14/2.

Baartman backed up his partner with a double-wicket fourth over and got rid of Tim Robinson and debutant Nick Kelly to add pressure on the Blackcaps middle-order. A freak run-out of Bevon Jacobs followed it up, and they ended the powerplay with 36/5 on the board.

Mokoena impresses on debut

In the aftermath of a dominant powerplay display from the bowlers, the spin bowling duo of Mitchell Santner and Cole McConchie, alongside James Neesham, tried to provide a bit of stability. Captain Santner got 15 (19) before he got castled by his opposite number, Keshav Maharaj.

On the other end, the 19-year-old debutant Nqobani Mokoena put a stop to the rescue efforts from Neesham and McConchie. The top-scorer of the innings, Neesham, was dismissed on a slower delivery and caught by the wicketkeeper at 26 (21), while trying to slog sweep. McConhie soon followed the veteran after his 15 (11).

Mokoena eventually ended up with 3/26 on his international debut, while the experienced trio of Coetzee, Baartman and Maharaj scalped a couple of wickets each. New Zealand was bowled out for just 91 runs.

Esterhuizen's composure avoids a thriller

Following a disappointing first half of the match, the opening bowlers gave the Kiwis hope with early wickets. Zak Foulkes bowled a tight opening spell of 1/8 in his first two overs, dismissing Tony de Zorzi on 2 off 8. Kyle Jamieson also complimented him with Rubin Hermann’s wicket, just a ball after getting hit for a six.

However, after being reduced to 28/2 in 5 overs, South Africa did not struggle much to get past the target. Wicketkeeper Connor Esterhuizen stuck to one end and added 27(26) with Jason Smith for the 3rd wicket.

Jason Smith was dismissed for 10 (13) by Santner, who bowled a brilliant spell of 1/8 (4) and kept NZ's hope alive. However, with a low score on the board, they were unable to defend the target, despite taking the match into the death overs.

Dian Forrester scored 16* (25) to add the remaining 37 runs with Esterhuizen and took the team past the finish line. The wicketkeeper-opener finished with a steady 45* (48) on a relatively tacky pitch to bat on.

After taking the lead in this series, South Africa will now meet New Zealand on March 17 in Hamilton for the second T20I.
