As the Proteas look to hit back at the Kiwis, Keshav Maharaj will be the makeshift captain for the tour. On the other hand, Mitchell Santner will lead a second-string Blackcaps side for the series.

NZ vs SA player battles

Tim Robinson vs Gerald Coetzee

Having missed the recent T20 World Cup squads, both Tim Robinson and Gerland Coetzee will have a point to prove in this series. The Kiwi opener, who has 561 T20I runs at a healthy strike rate of 138.86 with a century with be up against Coetzee early in the innings and how the duo fares against each other could play a role in how NZ’s innings goes with an inexperienced squad.

Jason Smith vs James Neesham

The explosive finisher recently made a return to the South African set-up after being out of the squad for some time; however, he did not play much in the T20 World Cup. His recent blitz against the West Indies, scoring 26 off 10 in a 125-run chase in 10 overs, was a good example of his hitting prowess.

He will be up against the experienced James Neesham in the middle and death overs. While sometimes Neesham concedes plenty, he has a knack for picking wickets in a cluster as well. This battle in the South African innings will be one to watch out for as well.

Mitchell Santner vs Nqobani Mokoena

Since the start of 2025, Mitchell Santner has been one of the prominent finishers in world cricket, with a T20I strike rate of 163.06 at an average of 40.22 for his 362 runs. He also batted well in the T20 World Cup, scoring crucial runs against Sri Lanka in the Super 8 stage.

will face the 19-year-old exciting pacer Nqobani Mokoena, who picked 9 (second most) wickets at the death in the recent SA20 season. With a chance to improve the national selectors in the absence of the main bowlers, Mokoena would like to grab this opportunity and stop the Blackcaps skipper from going all guns blazing on Sunday.

NZ vs SA match winner prediction: Who will win 1st T20I?

Both New Zealand and South Africa are going to play with their second-string teams in this series, with the main players rested after the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. So, the match looks well-poised ahead of the match day. However, on paper, the Kiwis are a bit more experienced and have regular skipper Santner leading the side, so they could clinch the series opener.
