Mohammad Amir Breaks Silence On IPL 2027 Participation

For years, Pakistani players have not participated in the IPL following the 2008 season because of political tensions between India and Pakistan. However, ex-Pak pacer Mohammad Amir could soon be an exception.

Amir’s career has been controversial due to his involvement in the 2010 fixing scandal, for which he was banned for five years and served jail time. However, he made his comeback and represented Pakistan again until 2024.

Mohammad Amir keeps IPL doors open

Meanwhile, after being sidelined from the Pakistan national team, Mohammad Amir has shifted his focus to franchise leagues. And now, the unthinkable dream of playing in the IPL could also happen for Amir.

Amir has obtained British citizenship through his wife, Narjis Amir, who is a British national. Hence, since the fast bowler is no longer a Pakistani citizen, he is eligible to feature in the IPL.

When asked for his future plans regarding registering for the IPL auction, Mohammad Amir said he is yet to make up his mind. But he does plan on using his British citizenship to play as an overseas player in PSL 2027.

"I will play in the PSL in 2027 as an overseas player. As for the IPL, I don't know yet whether I will participate," Amir told a reporter.

In other words, he has left the possibility open without confirming his participation.

Will Amir succeed in bypassing the BCCI?

While Mohammad Amir may be technically eligible to feature in the IPL due to his British citizenship, the decision will ultimately boil down to the BCCI. The board has always been strict in these matters.

For the organisers, the sentiments of the fans are important. In the recent past, the BCCI ordered KKR to release Mustafizur Rahman from their squad after fans objected to his involvement in the league due to communal conflict in Bangladesh. 

Hence, at a time when the political unrest between India and Pakistan is at an all-time high, allowing an ex-Pakistan player to feature in the IPL isn’t an ideal move for the BCCI.

It is also possible that Mohammad Amir may be aware of this roadblock and hence, he is keeping his stand neutral on his participation in the IPL.

Amir’s career to change after becoming a British national

Having said that, acquiring British citizenship has opened a lot of doors for Mohammad Amir. He can now play as a local player in some English domestic competitions, including the County Championship.

In fact, he is currently representing Trent Rockets in The Hundred as a domestic player. Amir has also played for Notts Outlaws in the T20 Blast as a local player. 

And now, he plans to play in the PSL 2027 as an overseas player to fetch a higher salary contract. So overall, even if IPL doesn’t materialise for Mohammad Amir, his British citizenship will only add value to his existing career.
