Did BCCI Miss The Trick By Ignoring Mohammed Shami For IND Vs SL Tests 2026?

India are all set to take on Sri Lanka in a crucial two-match Test series, with each game carrying huge importance in World Test Championship (WTC 2025-27 cycle). However, just before the series, Team India suffered a major setback as Jasprit Bumrah was ruled out due to injury. 

On Monday, the BCCI confirmed that Bumrah is yet to recover completely from the left knee injury he sustained during the ODI series against England. 

Surprisingly, instead of recalling experienced pacer Mohammed Shami, the selectors named Jammu and Kashmir seamer Auqib Nabi as Bumrah's replacement.

It is important to note that Mohammed Shami has done everything possible to force his way back into the Test side. After recovering from his fitness issues following the Champions Trophy 2025, the veteran pacer delivered an outstanding domestic season.

During the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy, Shami claimed 20 wickets in just four matches, proving that he still possesses the ability to trouble top-quality batters. Furthermore, he also featured in SMAT and VHT. 

Despite these performances, the selectors once again ignored the 35-year-old. Therefore, many believe that his exclusion was surprising, especially after Bumrah's injury created an opening in India’s Test squad.

How has Mohammed Shami performed against Sri Lanka?

One of the strongest arguments in Shami's favour is his excellent record in Tests against Sri Lanka.

The right-arm pacer has represented India in 64 Tests and picked up 229 wickets. Meanwhile, against Sri Lanka, he has taken 24 wickets in 7 matches at a superb strike rate of 42.46.

As mentioned in the table, Shami's record in Sri Lankan conditions is equally impressive. Notably, Shami has played 3 Tests in Sri Lanka and picked up 10 wickets while maintaining an economy rate of just 2.90. Considering Sri Lankan pitches usually offer very little assistance to pacers, these numbers become even more valuable.

Then Why Did BCCI Overlook Mohammed Shami?

Although Shami's performances in Sri Lanka deserved recognition, the BCCI appears to have made the decision with the future in mind. At 35 years of age, Shami is in the final phase of his international career and has struggled with injuries over the last few years.

Therefore, the Indian team management seems determined to invest in younger fast bowlers instead of relying on experienced campaigners.

According to a recent Sportstar report, the selectors have identified a pool of 15 fast bowlers who will be groomed for the next cycle.

On the other hand, Sri Lanka series is part of this WTC cycle, where every victory could prove decisive. India are currently placed 5th in points table, meaning they cannot afford to lose valuable points if they are indeed hoping to qualify for the WTC Final.

Since Shami is not part of India's long-term plans, the management preferred to give Auqib Nabi his maiden call-up rather than recalling the veteran.

The omission of Mohammed Shami clearly indicates that the BCCI and the Indian team management have started looking beyond the veteran pacer. 

Their focus is now on developing young fast bowlers who can lead India's bowling attack in the coming years, especially after Jasprit Bumrah.

So, by ignoring Mohammed Shami for the Sri Lanka Tests, the BCCI didn't miss the trick but put a confident step forward to build India's next crop of fast bowlers.
