In match number 45 of the ongoing IPL 2026, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) will take on Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. Notably, the Ajinkya Rahane-led KKR are battling to revive their season after a dismal start to the IPL 2026 campaign.
Following a 2026 mini-auction where they spent heavily on marquee players, the team struggled initially under captain Ajinkya Rahane, starting with just two wins in their first eight matches.
However, in what seems to be a positive update for KKR, their ace pacer Matheesha Pathirana is completely fit to play after being ruled out of action for the first half of the IPL 2026.
Will Matheesha Pathirana play versus SRH in today's IPL match?
For a long time, Kolkata Knight Riders have eagerly waited for the arrival of ex-CSK pacer, Matheesha Pathirana. The Sri Lankan pacer came to India ahead of KKR's clash against Rajasthan Royals on April 19, 2026.
He missed the previous games and sat out in the clash against Lucknow Super Giants at the Ekana Cricket Stadium. Despite having begun training, Pathirana was probably considered not match-ready. Even the list of five impact substitutes does not include him.

In the match against LSG, Pathirana was left out of the starting lineup because skipper Ajinkya Rahane remained confident in the combination that won against Rajasthan Royals.
If everything goes according to plan, Pathirana remains available for KKR’s upcoming match against Sunrisers Hyderabad. However, his inclusion still depends on what team combination the captain and team management aspire to go with.
"Pathirana has arrived. He's been around the group for a little bit now. So, we'll look at conditions and make a decision on the side that we think's best for tomorrow's game. He's been bowling well at training and it's great to have him as a part of the side," said Tim Southee on the eve of the SRH vs KKR match.
Pathirana's inclusion to boost KKR's bowling contingent
KKR bought Matheesha Pathirana, who was earlier with CSK, for ₹18 crore in the IPL 2026. Pathirana will most likely play tonight’s SRH vs KKR, as he has already received the final nod from the Sri Lankan cricket board and has also spent over a week under the medical staff supervision of his IPL franchise, KKR.
Notably, Pathirana’s potential inclusion in KKR’s playing 11 will offer a much-needed death-bowling specialist to a struggling bowling unit. His arrival is expected to strengthen their attacking pace and help reverse a difficult start to their season.
How can KKR qualify for the playoffs?
As of now, KKR's playoff hopes are alive but extremely slim (approx. 4% chance), requiring a near-perfect run after a disastrous start. With a very poor Net Run Rate (NRR) and low point tally, KKR must win almost all remaining games to reach 15–17 points, likely needing to win 6-7 of their final matches to survive.
KKR Qualification Scenarios (IPL 2026):
Scenario 1: Win All Remaining Matches (17 Points): If KKR wins all remaining games (e.g., against SRH, DC, RCB, GT, MI, DC), they can reach 17 points, which almost always guarantees a top-four finish.
Scenario 2: Win 5 of Remaining 6 Matches (15 Points): This is a moderate-chance scenario. 15 points requires a significantly improved NRR to compete with teams likely to finish on similar points.
Scenario 3: The "Perfect Six/Seven" Goal: Due to a massive, negative NRR of around -0.751, KKR cannot afford more than one more loss.
