CSK playoff qualification scenarios [Source: AP]
The Chennai Super Kings got off to a torrid start to the IPL 2026, with three back-to-back defeats, finding themselves at the bottom half of the table for the majority of the first half of the league phase. However, with four wins in the last six matches, they are back in the thick of things, at number 6 in the points table.
With a big win over the arch-rivals Mumbai Indians by 8 wickets and, more importantly, chasing down the 160-run total in just 18.1 overs, has helped them improve their net run-rate significantly.
Having played 9 matches now, they are well within the reach of making it to the top-4 by the end of the league phase. So, as they chase a playoff finish for the first time since winning the IPL 2023, we take a look at the scenarios in which they can finish top-4.
How can Chennai Super Kings qualify for IPL 2026 playoffs?
Contrary to their usual philosophy of backing the experience, CSK under Ruturaj Gaikwad looks like a young and exciting unit, full of players who are quality long-term prospects. That said, it will not be a straightforward road for them to make it to the final four of the competition.
Since IPL has become a 10-team tournament, the following have cut-off to finish in the top-4:
| Season | Points |
| 2022 | 16 points |
| 2023 | 16 points |
| 2024 | 14 points (on net run-rate) |
| 2025 | 16 points |
Looking at the above data, the team needs to finish with 16 points to play the playoff, if they do not want to depend on the other teams or the tiebreaker (net run rate) to finish in the top-4.
Currently, there are 4 teams above them with 12 or more points, one team with 10 points and one team level on points at 8, which means it is unlikely that they finish top-4 with 14 points, unless things go drastically wrong for the others. Basically, they need to win at least four of their remaining 5 matches and keep their qualification in their hands.

They will play DC (8 points) in the next match, where either team will go to 10 points, making things clearer for them. Further, they will also play SRH and GT in their remaining fixtures, and wins there would mean they can disrupt the upper half of the table.
To their respite, they play the bottom-placed LSG twice, after the DC game and before the SRH game. So, if they win their next three fixtures on the trot, they could be on 14 points with the big matches left, where they can push a top-4 contender down.
What are Chennai Super Kings’ remaining games of IPL 2026?
According to the IPL 2026 schedule, the Chennai Super Kings have five matches to go. Out of the five matches, three are against the top-4 contenders, DC, SRH and GT, while two back-to-back games will be against the bottom-placed LSG.
