The MI vs CSK clash once again delivered more than just a result, as it brought together a mix of nostalgia and fresh moments on the cricket field.
While the high-voltage MI vs CSK encounter kept fans on the edge, it was the striking similarity between CSK’s new signee Kartik Sharma’s celebration and MS Dhoni’s iconic gesture that grabbed widespread attention.
As Kartik Sharma played a crucial role in Chennai Super Kings’ convincing win, echoes of MS Dhoni’s famous celebration resurfaced.
The MS Dhoni Gun Celebration
Dhoni produced one of the most iconic innings in ODI history during the India vs Sri Lanka clash at Sawai Mansingh Stadium on October 31, 2005, and his celebration became just as memorable as the knock itself.
Chasing a daunting target of 299, India were under pressure early, but Dhoni turned the game on its head with a breathtaking unbeaten 183 off 145 balls. His innings was laced with 15 fours and 10 sixes, showcasing fearless stroke play and unmatched dominance against a quality Sri Lankan attack.
As he neared the milestone, MS Dhoni’s confidence and control over the chase were evident, guiding India to 303/4 in just 46.1 overs to seal a six-wicket win with 23 balls remaining.

Upon reaching his century and later accelerating towards his career-best score, Dhoni celebrated in a unique fashion by mimicking a gun-shot gesture with his bat, symbolizing the explosive nature of his innings.
The celebration instantly caught the attention of fans and became one of the most talked-about moments of his early career. It perfectly reflected Dhoni’s aggressive mindset and fearless approach, marking the arrival of a new match-winner in Indian cricket.
Kartik Sharma Reveals Reason Behind the Gun Celebration
Somewhat like MS Dhoni's gun celebration, Sharma, a serial six-hitter from Rajasthan, and a player playing the sixth IPL match of his career, shared a similar moment while explaining the reason behind the special celebration too.
Speaking after the match, Kartik Sharma shared that it was not because of Dhoni. It is because of his first fifty in the tournament, and he also had it pre-decided that if he scored in the MI vs CSK match, he would give that reaction on the field.
“Yes sir, first fifty, that's why I had that reaction. [Was it a pre-decided celebration?] I had decided that if I score today, I will give that reaction,” Kartik said.
Sharma Dominates MI vs CSK Match With Maiden Fifty
Notably, Kartik Sharma played a valiant knock of 54 off 40 balls alongside captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, who scored 67 off 48 balls to chase MI's 160 runs inside 18.1 overs.
The duo was responsible for a dominant win as CSK won the match by eight wickets, with only Sanju Samson falling early for just 11 runs and Urvil Patel falling after a 12-ball 24 in the sixth over, just before the powerplay ended.
The Mumbai Indians camp, though, wasn't impressive with the bat at all. Only Naman Dhir and Ryan Rickelton, alongside Suryakumar Yadav, fired some shots to help MI reach a respectable total, as skipper Hardik Pandya faltered with the bat again amidst a string of poor scores.
Will CSK Reach The IPL 2026 Playoffs?
Nevertheless, this win will be a big boost for CSK since it keeps them in the playoff race. Although they are sitting in the bottom half of the table, CSK are very much alive with 8 points from 9 matches.
With five games still left, CSK can reach a maximum of 14 points if they win all their upcoming fixtures and hence remain in a comfortable position as of now, despite any complex mathematical calculations.
