Major Umpiring Blunder Hit IND vs ENG 2nd T20I; India Benefited

A chaotic and confusing event unfolded during the 18th over of India’s innings in the second T20I at Old Trafford on July 4, leaving players, commentators and fans scratching their heads. As the match took place, a rare umpiring blunder had the cricket community confused.

The incident was a hodgepodge of situations that involved a disputed catch, a run that wasn’t given, a run that was then given, and a very long delay in the match, all packed into just two deliveries from Sam Curran.

Jofra Archer’s Catch Of Tilak Varma Denied

The drama began with the fourth ball of the 18th over. Sam Curran bowled a slower delivery to Tilak Varma, who crouched low and tried to whip the ball towards deep square leg.

Jofra Archer, stationed in the deep, charged in and dived forward, appearing to take a fine low catch. Archer himself wasn’t sure if he had held it cleanly, so the on-field umpires sent the decision upstairs to TV umpire Russell Warren.

Replays quickly showed the ball had burst through Archer’s hands and brushed the ground. The big screen however, flashed ‘NOT OUT’, and the Indian fans roared in joy.

Umpiring Confusion Over Running Blunder

While the ball was in the air, both Tilak Varma and non-striker Axar Patel had crossed on the pitch. However, thinking the catch had been taken cleanly, Tilak stopped running and did not complete a full run.

The umpires initially decided that because no run was completed, the delivery would be recorded as a dot ball. Yet, at the same time, they placed Axar Patel on strike for the next ball. If it truly was a dot ball, Tilak should have faced the next delivery, not Axar.

Then came the first twist. In a late, hurried call, the officials suddenly ruled that a run had been scored after all. So the delivery was now counted as a single to Tilak Varma, and Axar Patel remaining on strike suddenly made perfect sense.

Added Delay For The Run Confusion

Axar duly faced the fifth ball of the over and pushed it towards deep backward point for a single. But as soon as that run was completed, the game ground to a halt again.

The two on-field umpires held another long chat in the middle. Once more, TV umpire Warren was called upon to check whether the batters had legitimately crossed before the catch was taken.

It seemed the same confusion was being replayed. After more deliberation, the officials confirmed the earlier decision. The delivery to Tilak Varma was a run, and the single off Axar’s bat stood. The match eventually moved on, with the entire episode having caused a significant and messy delay.

India In Total Control Of 2nd T20I

India have been in control for most of the second T20I at Manchester despite Harry Brook's counter-attack keeping England in the chase.

India's innings got off to a flying start with Abhishek Sharma and debutant Vaibhav Sooryavanshi adding 50 runs in just 4.5 overs.

Abhishek was the aggressor, smashing 43 off 24 balls with eight fours, while Sooryavanshi contributed 14 off 10 with two sixes before being stumped off Will Jacks.

After the quick start, Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer rebuilt the innings with a valuable partnership. Iyer attacked the bowlers during the middle overs, while Kishan anchored the innings before falling one run short of a half-century.

India finished strongly thanks to Tilak Varma's unbeaten 24 off just 11 balls, helping the visitors post a competitive 190/7. Defending 191, India made the perfect start with the ball.

Arshdeep Singh removed both openers inside the first over, dismissing Phil Salt for a first-ball duck and Jos Buttler for a three-ball duck, reducing England to 1/2 and putting the hosts under immediate pressure.
