Zimbabwe have named a 15-man squad for three home one-day internationals against Bangladesh, with fast bowler Richard Ngarava confirmed as the new ODI captain.
It will be his first time leading the side in the 50-over format after being appointed white-ball skipper late last year. Meanwhile, opener Innocent Kaia returns to the squad on the back of a maiden Test century in the innings victory over Bangladesh earlier this week.
The Zimbabwe vs Bangladesh series, set for July 6, 9 and 11 at Harare Sports Club, marks Zimbabwe’s first ODI cricket since they hosted Sri Lanka in August 2025.
Richard Ngarava Chosen For Bangladesh ODI Series
Ngarava’s appointment represents a deliberate change of direction from Zimbabwe Cricket. For years the team leaned on batters or all-rounders for leadership, yet the selectors have now handed the 50-over reins to a 28-year-old frontline fast bowler.
The move aims to express a more aggressive, bowling-led approach. Ngarava will lead a pace attack that includes Blessing Muzarabani, Brad Evans, Newman Nyamhuri and Ernest Masuku. Having been named white-ball captain at the end of 2025, this series gives him his first real chance to marshal the side in an ODI.
Why Was Craig Ervine And Sikandar Raza Ignored?
Sikandar Raza and Craig Ervine were bypassed for the top job despite both being part of the squad. The decision signals a clear succession plan rather than a temporary fix.
Raza returns to national colours after a short franchise stint in England, while Ervine remains a key top-order presence. Instead of giving either veteran the captaincy, the team management has surrounded Ngarava with their experience.
The pair will act as an on-field brain trust, offering important help and guidance with field placements. However, for Sikandar Raza and Ervine, the leadership chapter in ODI cricket now appears firmly closed.

Fresh Faces Amid Veteran Side Opted For Bangladesh Tour
After 11 months without ODI action, the squad blends promising newcomers with trusted returnees. Among the fresh names is 20-year-old left-arm seamer Newman Nyamhuri, Zimbabwe’s leading wicket-taker at the 2024 Under-19 World Cup, who made his senior debut in December 2024.
All-rounder Brian Bennett, 22, arrives high on confidence after a historic T20 World Cup half-century against India earlier this year. Top-order batter Ben Curran, brother of England internationals Sam and Tom, switched allegiance to Zimbabwe and debuted in late 2024.
Seam-bowling all-rounder Ernest Masuku, 33, earned his first ODI cap last August after years of domestic consistency.
Innocent Kaia’s recall is a direct reward for his 140-run Test knock against Bangladesh. Left-arm spinner Wellington Masakadza is back for white-ball duties after missing the Test series.
Ryan Burl and wicketkeeper Clive Madande return from a Zimbabwe A tour of Bangladesh. The core of the side remains intact, with Ervine, Raza, Muzarabani, Wessly Madhevere and Tadiwanashe Marumani all retained.

Richard Ngarava To Lead The Next Generation In Test And ODI?
Elevating Ngarava to the ODI captaincy positions him as the figurehead of Zimbabwe’s next generation. While his current mandate is white-ball cricket, the move is widely seen as a step towards long-term leadership that could eventually take over the complete Test arena.
A fast-bowler captain remains a rarity in international cricket, and his appointment is designed to build a fresh team identity centred on energy and attack.
With veteran heads alongside him to ease the transition, Richard Ngarava’s first series in charge will offer an early glimpse of the direction Zimbabwe intend to take across formats.
