Cricketing legends Jason Gillespie and Kevin Pietersen debated over the value of the IPL vs country after England’s Jacob Bethell was suggested by former England captain Alastair Cook to return from IPL 2026 mid-tournament and help his county win the championship.

Jacob Bethell is part of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) franchise and was warming the bench as RCB opted for Phil Salt and Virat Kohli as their openers. Alastair Cook claimed that although the IPL setting provides educational possibilities, a young player's development still depends more on real match practice.

He’s sitting at IPL doing nothing: Alastair Cook on Jacob Bethell; Kevin Pietersen rebukes Cook

“Jacob Bethell shouldn’t really be it because he’s not opening. He’s sitting at the IPL, not doing anything. Ideally, he could come back and open for Warwickshire to help England,” Cook had said on the Stick to Cricket podcast.

However, Cook’s former England teammate and ex-captain Kevin Pietersen disagreed with Cook and fiercely rejected the idea. Notably, Kevin Pietersen has been a devoted supporter of the Indian Premier League and even fought with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to play in the league when it began in 2008.

“Stay in India, Jacob," Kevin Pietersen tells Jacob Bethell, saying Alastair Cook has no idea

Kevin Pietersen played for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL 2008 and also captained the franchise as well. He continued playing in the IPL, despite being at odds with the ECB, who wanted their players to skip the IPL for England duties, while Pietersen wanted England players to learn from the best in the league.

He shared the same suggestion to Jacob Bethell and asked him to stay put in India and with the RCB franchise. He even accused Cook of not understanding the value of being inside an IPL dressing room.

“Alastair Cook has absolutely NO IDEA what it’s like to be in the IPL. Stay in India, Jacob. Even though you're not playing, you're learning and will be a way better player,” Pietersen posted on X.

‘Give me a break, you muppet’: Jason Gillespie doubles down on Kevin Pietersen

Now former Australia pacer and Pakistan head coach Jason Gillespie has taken on Kevin Pietersen and entered the debate of IPL vs. country. In an interaction with fellow Australian greats Glenn McGrath and Damien Fleming on The Fast Bowling Cartel podcast, Gillespie ridiculed Pietersen's critique of Cook and mockingly attacked the former England batter's assertions.

“The nerve of Sir Alastair Cook to suggest something like that. KP has gone off the deep end and stated that Sir Alastair Cook’s opinion doesn’t matter because he’s never been to the IPL and would not know.

I think Sir Alastair Cook had a valid point, but the way KP absolutely hammered him for having an opinion—give me a spell, boys. Absolute nonsense,” Gillespie insisted Cook had made a perfectly reasonable point.

Then, mocking Pietersen's assertions that he paved the way for players to prioritize franchise cricket, Gillespie became even more harsh.

“He reckons he would have played 150 Tests or more. He’s the one who paved the way. Thank you, Kevin, for the stars above, the sun, the moon, the earth we walk on, and the air we breathe. It was all about cash for you, Kev. Give me a break, you muppet,” Gillespie ended.

Conclusion: Jatin's thoughts on IPL vs country

The debate on IPL vs country will go on as players and cricket boards clash over their availability. There have been some boards like Cricket Australia and the England and Wales Cricket Board, who have been able to rein in their players with lucrative contracts.

However, other boards like South Africa, and West Indies have surrendered to the players, who have opted out of international cricket to play in not only IPL, but other leagues as well.

Playing in the IPL gives foreign players valuable learning on playing on subcontinent pitches. They then apply the same when they play India in India, and results have been in favor of their country.
