Rajasthan Royals became the fourth and final team to qualify for the IPL 2026 playoffs after winning their last league game against Mumbai Indians. And this result has helped captain Riyan Parag achieve a big milestone.
RR began the season with a lot of uncertainty. Veteran captain Sanju Samson was traded for CSK, leaving the Royals under the fresh and inexperienced captaincy of Parag. However, the end result turned out to be positive.
Riyan Parag enters the league of MS Dhoni
Rajasthan Royals had a positive start to the tournament, winning four of their starting games in the IPL 2026 season. Despite a blip mid-season, Riyan Parag endured, and his team regrouped to qualify for the playoffs by merit.
Interestingly, this is Parag’s first season as IPL captain, and he has entered an elite list of players who previously led their team to the playoffs in their maiden season as captains.
This feat was previously achieved by legends like MS Dhoni, Shane Warner, Virender Sehwag, Anil Kumble and many more. Not only that, present stars like Hardik Pandya and Rishabh Pant also pulled off such similar stints in the recent past.

RR slotted into a tough playoff contest
Meanwhile, the road to the IPL 2026 final is going to be extremely tough for Rajasthan Royals even though they have qualified for the playoffs.
RR will face SRH in the Eliminator contest on May 27 at Mullanpur Stadium in Chandigarh. Sunrisers Hyderabad have a lethal batting lineup featuring explosive hitters like Abhishek Sharma, Travis Head, Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen.
Hence, overpowering them will require a special bowling effort from RR. It’s a do-or-die game, as the loser of the contest will get eliminated from the tournament, while the winner will advance to the Qualifier 2 game, where they’ll meet the loser of the Qualifier 1 contest.
The duality of Riyan Parag’s debut IPL season as captain (Akshita's Take)
With Rajasthan Royals reaching the playoffs, Riyan Parag is being judged as a successful captain as he led the franchise to glory in his debut season as captain.
Since he had limited leadership experience, Parag did a good job withstanding the pressure of the IPL until the very final day of the league stages. Hence, as captain, Riyan has been outstanding.
However, as a batter, he is nowhere close to his best. The RR skipper has scored just 272 runs in 12 games at a strike rate of 152.80, including 2 fifties. As a captain, Parag was expected to lead from the front.
But he has lacked in that area so far. Moreover, the injury and off-field controversies didn’t help either. Regardless, for the payoffs, RR needs Riyan Parag to bounce back and contribute to the best of his ability.
