Italy have taken a major step towards a dream appearance at the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2027 after securing a top-two finish in Challenge League B in Tanzania. The European side sealed its place in the Cricket World Cup Qualifier Play-off alongside Uganda, with one match-day still remaining in the competition.

Italy's qualification was confirmed after they defeated Hong Kong, China by six wickets, leaving the latter unable to catch them in the race for the top two.

However, this is only the beginning for Italy. The 2027 World Cup, which is set to have new dates, will feature 14 teams, with 10 sides earning their places directly and the remaining four spots being decided through the Qualifier. For Italy, the road to South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia will now get considerably tougher.

Italy Snatch Top 2 Spot For Qualifier Play-Off

Italy have been one of the standout teams in Challenge League B throughout the qualification cycle. After 14 matches, they have won 11 games, lost just one and collected 24 points, putting them at the top of the table with an impressive net run rate of +2.118.

Uganda, meanwhile, secured second place with 22 points from 14 matches after winning 10 games. Hong Kong, China were the only team still capable of threatening the top two before Italy's final result, but their hopes disappeared after the Italians produced a composed six-wicket victory.

Hong Kong were bowled out for just 174 after Italy's bowlers made a brilliant start. Ali Hasan removed Anshuman Rath for a duck in the opening over before Jaspreet Singh dismissed Martin Coetzee.

At 64/5, Hong Kong were in serious trouble. Zeeshan Ali and Shahid Wasif then attempted to rescue the innings with half-centuries, but Italy eventually wrapped things up in the final over. Italy's chase was not entirely straightforward either, but Marcus Campopiano's unbeaten 74 ensured there was never a serious collapse.

The victory has effectively changed Italy's status in the qualification race as they are no longer fighting for survival and are now just two tournaments away from potentially making the biggest World Cup in their history.

How Can Italy Qualify For 2027 World Cup?

Italy's journey though, is far from over. Their next objective will be to survive the eight-team Cricket World Cup Qualifier Play-off. The tournament will feature the four Challenge League qualifiers and the four bottom teams from CWC League 2.

The top four sides from the Play-off will then advance to the 10-team Cricket World Cup Qualifier.

Here’s a quick look at the road for Italy to the Cricket World Cup 2027:

  • Italy finish in the top two of Challenge League B and qualify for the CWC Qualifier Play-off.
  • Italy must finish in the top four of the eight-team Qualifier Play-off to progress further.
  • The Play-off will feature Italy, Uganda, the top two from Challenge League A and the bottom four teams from CWC League 2.
  • Italy then enter the 10-team Cricket World Cup Qualifier, alongside the top four from League 2, the other three Play-off qualifiers and two teams from the ODI rankings.
  • Italy must finish among the top four in the Qualifier to earn a place at the 2027 Cricket World Cup.
  • If Italy make the World Cup, they will join a 14-team tournament hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.

So, Italy are effectively two top-four finishes away from their first-ever Men's Cricket World Cup qualification.

Italy Could Make ODI History Along The Way

There is another major prize waiting for Italy at the Qualifier Play-off. The tournament carries ODI status, meaning Italy will be able to play official men's ODIs as part of the competition.

This gives the Italian side an opportunity to step onto a completely different level of international cricket while simultaneously chasing World Cup qualification. It could mark the beginning of a new chapter for Italian cricket.

The country has never qualified for the men's Cricket World Cup, but the current campaign has put them closer than ever to the global stage. With 11 wins from 14 matches and the best net run rate in Challenge League B, Italy have already demonstrated that they belong in the conversation.

The Challenge League has given Italy the platform. The Qualifier Play-off will determine whether they can take the next step, while the final Qualifier could ultimately decide whether the will travel to Africa for World Cup 2027.
