The India vs Ireland T20I series was supposed to be a cakewalk for the defending champions, India, but the series turned out to be a disaster for the Men in Blue as the hosts thrashed them 2-0 to create history in Belfast. This was Shreyas Iyer’s first assignment as India’s T20I captain, and he failed to deliver the goods.

Interestingly, the first game of the series was a one-sided contest as Ireland drubbed India. The second T20I was much closer, but India couldn’t keep their nerves as the hosts snatched the win.

Ireland thrash ‘overconfident’ India as Men in Blue create unwanted feat

In the first game of the T20I series between India and Ireland, the home side managed to post 182/9, but the target still looke chasebale, considering India had a famed batting lineup comprising the likes of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma at the top.

However, disaster struck as the Men in Blue failed to chase down the total and were dismissed for a paltry 148. The story was no different in the series finale as Ireland once again batted first, and posted 154/8.

Once again, the Indian batting lineup looked overconfident as the side crumbled under pressure and lost the game by 1 run as Ireland stole the show and the series, and for the first time since 2023, India managed to lose a bilateral T20I series.

Gavaskar lashes out at Shreyas Iyer for series loss vs Ireland

The series loss hurt everyone in India, including the former India captain, Sunil Gavaskar. The legendary batter stated that the day India lost the second T20I would be called the “worst day” in Indian cricket.

“Sunday, June 28, will go down as one of the worst days in Indian cricket. Losing a game of cricket is one thing, but to lose a series, albeit a two-match series, also depends on whom you lose to,” Gavaskar wrote in his column for Sportstar. “There are many low points in Indian cricket, and I have been a part of some, but to lose to Ireland has to be one of the lowest in the history of Indian cricket.”

The former World Cup winner didn’t mince his words when he stated that India were overconfident against Ireland, and were also casual in their approach.

“If Ireland had played exceptional cricket, then it would have lessened the blow. It was simply overconfidence and a sense of casualness that let India down, and that’s why the sadness.”

Did the T20 World Cup win made India overconfident against Ireland?

India entered the 2026 T20 World Cup as the clear favourites on their home turf, and the team moved to the Super 8 stage despite some scrappy performances. However, the team got a reality check as South Africa hammered them in their first Super 8 clash.

Their overconfidence was shattered as the Indian side regrouped and played some outstanding cricket to win the tournament.

It seems the Shreyas Iyer-led side had a similar approach against the Irish side as they looked overconfident, but the hosts gave them a reality check by easily winning the two T20I matches, and helped India create unwanted feats.
