The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has been contacted by the International Cricket Council (ICC).
The apex body has approached the English board over a video shared on the latter's official social media handles, pertaining to the international retirement of legendary all-rounder Ben Stokes.
It is worth noting that Stokes announced his retirement from international cricket on June 28 late last month, i.e., doing so in the middle of Day 4 of England’s series-deciding home Test against New Zealand.
While the explosive announcement was made halfway into Day 4, the video of Stokes addressing his teammates about the same was recorded before play began on the day.
The ICC has now alleged that the publishing of the footage at that time breaches its standards for players' and match officials' areas (PMOA) in international matches.
ICC raps England over PMOA breach
On June 28, the ECB shared the retirement video of Ben Stokes with the broadcasters and on their social media handles just before the tea interval on Day 4 of the third Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge.
However, the same video was recorded before play earlier in the day itself, at a time when Stokes was addressing his teammates.

The ICC has now alleged that the timing of the ECB’s video breaches the standards for Players and Match Officials’ Areas (PMOA) in international cricket (as per reports from Stephan Shemilt, BBC).
Article 2.2.11 of the PMOA indicates that cricket boards should ensure that "there are no fixed or temporary video cameras or other recording equipment set up within any dressing room used by the teams for the purposes of broadcasting video or audio footage."

As per the ICC letter, the ECB should have broadcast the footage of Stokes’ retirement announcement after the conclusion of the Test match the following day on June 29.
It is worth noting that the “minimum standards” for the PMOA were put in place in order to support ICC’s anti-corruption code. As of now, the ECB is yet to respond to the letter sent by the ICC.
Why did Ben Stokes announce international retirement?
While Ben Stokes did not reveal any exact reason behind the timing of his retirement from international cricket, one can assume that last month’s nightclub controversy played a significant role in his sudden exit.
Stokes and fellow all-rounder Gus Atkinson were both involved in an altercation with a rugby player outside a nightclub in London, shortly after England routed New Zealand by 115 runs in the first Test.
Both cricketers were later cleared by the ECB of any wrongdoing; however, the increasing media scrutiny may have left the skipper emotionally vulnerable.
ECB searches for next Test captain after Ben Stokes
The ECB is now actively looking for its new Test captain after the retirement of Ben Stokes. While the board is yet to make an announcement, white-ball skipper Harry Brook has expressed his interest in taking over the high-profile role.
As per the schedule, the England cricket team will now host Pakistan for a three-match Test series between August 19 and September 13 next month.
