India are all set to face England in the semi-final of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 on March 5 at the iconic Wankhede Stadium. Amid all the chaos with the Indian team at the T20 World Cup, Abhishek Sharma has been at the forefront of the criticism.
The IND vs ENG big clash comes after India defeated the West Indies in their final Super 8 match and secured a place in the last four.
India’s journey to the semi-finals has been full of ups and downs. At first, they suffered a loss against the South Africa in their opening Super 8 match. However, they quickly recovered and bounced back strongly. After that defeat, India registered back-to-back wins against the Zimbabwe and the West Indies.
India qualify for T20 World Cup semifinal
In their must-win match against the West Indies at Eden Gardens, India chased down a challenging target of 196 runs in just 19.2 overs. This impressive chase helped them confirm their semi-final spot.

During that match, Sanju Samson played a brilliant unbeaten knock of 97 runs from 50 balls, leading the team to victory. Earlier in the innings, Jasprit Bumrah delivered an important bowling spell, taking 2 wickets for 36 runs in his four overs and restricting the West Indies to 195/4 in 20 overs. As a result, India managed to control the game and finish strongly.
Pitch conditions have troubled Indian batters
It is important to understand that the pitches used in T20 World Cup 2026 have been quite different from those seen in India’s recent home series.
Unlike the flat and batting-friendly pitches Indian players are used to, the current surfaces have been slow. In many matches, the ball has stopped after pitching, making it difficult for batters to time their shots properly.
Because of this, India’s top-order batters have struggled to score freely. Timing the ball has been a major issue, and as a result, some players have not been able to perform at their best.
Wankhede pitch could change the game
However, things might be different in the semi-final. Reports suggest that the match at Wankhede will be played on the same surface that previously hosted games like England vs West Indies and Nepal vs Italy. This pitch is expected to favor batters and could turn into a high-scoring contest.
Moreover, pitches in ICC tournaments are carefully monitored by the International Cricket Council to ensure fairness and balance in the game. Therefore, both teams are likely to get equal opportunities.
So far, Wankhede Stadium has hosted seven matches in T20 World Cup, with the average first-innings score being around 175 runs. Notably, the West Indies recorded the highest total at this venue, 254/6 against Zimbabwe during a Super 8 match. This clearly shows that big scores are possible on this ground.
Golden opportunity for Abhishek Sharma
This batting-friendly pitch could be a golden opportunity for young Indian opener Abhishek Sharma. So far in the tournament, his performance has been below expectations. In six innings, he has scored only 80 runs with a strike rate of 131.15. Therefore, the semi-final could be an important match for Abhishek Sharma to prove himself and silence his critics.
If the pitch truly supports batting, Abhishek Sharma will have the perfect chance to regain his confidence and contribute significantly to the team.
On the other hand, England have also been in excellent form. They topped Group 2 after winning all three of their Super 8 matches against the New Zealand, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. They finished with 6 points and a strong net run rate of +1.096, becoming the first team to qualify for the semi-finals.
