In a significant development, rumours have been circulating that Indian opener Sanju Samson could face a ban from the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 semifinal against England. These speculations emerged after his emotional on-field celebration following a match-winning knock against the West Indies.

Consequently, reports suggest that the batter is under the scanner of the International Cricket Council (ICC), raising concerns among fans about a possible suspension.

Sanju Samson's viral celebration against WI

Notably, it is not merely the celebration that has drawn attention. Rather, it is what preceded it that has sparked debate. Immediately after smashing the winning boundary, Sanju Samson removed his helmet and threw it onto the ground.

Thereafter, the Kerala batter dropped to his knees and raised both hands toward the sky, thanking the god. Understandably overwhelmed with emotion after guiding India into the semifinal, he could not contain his joy.

As a result, the dramatic gesture quickly went viral and triggered discussions about whether it breached the ICC’s Code of Conduct.

Can Sanju Samson be punished?

Technically, yes, Sanju Samson can be penalised if the act is deemed as “abuse of cricket equipment.” According to Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct, players are required to maintain appropriate behaviour on the field.

Specifically, the rules prohibit actions such as throwing or striking items like helmets, bats, or stumps, irrespective of whether it is done in anger or excitement.

Furthermore, the ICC closely monitors excessive celebrations, inappropriate language, conduct that brings the game into disrepute, and dissent towards umpires.

Therefore, if Samson’s act is classified as a Level 1 or Level 2 offence, he could face a financial fine, demerit points, or, in more serious cases, a one-match suspension. However, match referees often consider the emotional context. If the helmet was thrown purely out of joy and not frustration, the punishment may be lenient.

What penalties could Sanju Samson face?

In most similar cases, such behaviour falls under a Level 1 breach. Accordingly, the Match Referee may issue an official reprimand, impose a fine of up to 50 per cent of the match fee, or award one or two demerit points. Although celebratory gestures do not automatically invite sanctions, they may still be treated as breaches at the referee’s discretion.

For instance, on 18 February, George Munsey received one demerit point for throwing his helmet after being dismissed in a T20 World Cup 2026 Group C match against Nepal. The Scotland batter was found to have breached Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel.

At present, there is no official confirmation from the ICC regarding any action against Samson. Meanwhile, the Indian team, which has already reached Mumbai, will be hoping their in-form batter avoids any penalty ahead of the important semifinal clash against Group 2 toppers, England at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday, March 5.
