The Bangladesh cricket team has been through a lot, and now the ICC has thrown a new wrench in their way. Bangladesh recently had a huge standoff with the Jay Shah-headed International Cricket Council recently over traveling to India for the T20 World Cup 2026.
The then-Muhammad Yunus-led interim government didn’t have such a great view of India and was reluctant to send the Bangladesh team to India. This was further complicated by the fact that the Indian government and people had criticized Bangladesh for atrocities being committed on people of the Hindu religion in recent clashes.
Bangladesh team was removed from the ICC T20 World Cup 2026
With tensions at an all-time high between Bangladesh and India, the Bangladesh Cricket Board and sports advisor made several allegations against the BCCI and India and refused to send the Bangladesh team for their T20 World Cup 2026 matches in India.
They wanted their matches to be shifted to Sri Lanka or be swapped with other teams from other groups. They received backing from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), but in the end, the ICC decided to remove Bangladesh from the ICC event itself and replaced them with Scotland. But they were given their participation money, and no additional punishments were levied on them.
Bangladesh has played ODI series against Pakistan since then and is currently engaged with New Zealand in another ODI series at home.

Bangladesh clashed against New Zealand in a three-ODI series
Bangladesh had won the first ODI in Mirpur by 6 wickets after chasing down the 199-run target with ease. However, New Zealand bounced back to level the three-ODI series 1-1. Thanks to fifties by Henry Nicholls and Muhammad Abbas, New Zealand posted 247/8 in the second ODI.
In response, Bangladesh only managed 221 runs, despite 57 by Saif Hassan and 55 by Towhid Hridoy. However, this defeat has become more hurtful for Bangladesh as they have been punished by the ICC for breaking a big rule of international cricket.
ICC fines Bangladesh for a slow overrate against New Zealand in the second ODI
In the second men's ODI in Dhaka on Monday, Bangladesh maintained a slow over-rate against New Zealand and was penalized 10% of their match fee.
After taking time allowances into account and determining that Mehidy Hasan Miraz's team was two overs short of the objective, Andy Pycroft of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees assessed the punishment.
According to Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which deals with minimum over-rate offenses, players are penalized five percent of their match fee for each over that their team fails to bowl within the designated time.
There was no need for a formal hearing because Mehidy admitted to the crime and agreed to the suggested punishment. The charge was leveled by on-field umpires Richard Illingworth and Gazi Sohel, third umpire Nitin Menon, and fourth umpire Masudur Rahman Mukul.
The third and final ODI between Bangladesh and New Zealand will be played on April 23 in Mirpur. This series will then see the two teams clashing in three T20Is, starting April 27, with all games to be played in Chattogram.
