Heinrich Klaasen is touted as one of the best batters going around in the T20 format. However, at almost 34, the Sunrisers Hyderabad batter decided to hang up his boots from international cricket last year.
Playing for the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the IPL 2026, the dynamic batter blasted a 35-ball 52 on Thursday against Kolkata. The former Proteas stitched a remarkable partnership of 82 with Nitish Kumar Reddy (39), punishing KKR and pushing the total to 226/8.
As a result, SRH bagged their maiden victory of the season, beating Kolkata by 65 runs at Eden Gardens.
Heinrich Klaasen on taking back retirement
In a video posted by the IPL, Heinrich Klaasen spoke about his decision to take back his retirement while speaking with his partner in crime, Nitish Kumar Reddy.
Reddy asked the former South African batter whether he would un-retire himself, given his form in recent times, which he translated against KKR, hitting his 8th IPL half-century.
Klaasen said he won't reverse his decision, despite speaking with the South African T20I captain, Aiden Markram.

"It was a thought for about two week. Then we decided against it. Obviously, my family played a huge role in it. My friends they did extremely well in the World Cup, I had a little bit of FOMO to come back," Heinrich Klaasen said on a video shared by IPL.com.
"I spoke to Aiden (Markram) actually. He said if he's captain, then I will definitely come back. But after the World Cup, I realised it's not going to happen. So, I'm not coming back," he added.
Why did Heinrich Klaasen retire at 33?
In 2025, Heinrich Klaasen took a sudden decision to retire from the international format. Even though the Champions Trophy was the last assignment for South Africa, the defeat to India in the 2024 T20 World Cup final would have been the cornerstone behind an emotional decision.
In the big-ticket game, he slammed a half-century and took the Proteas almost home, but they lost the game even after needing just 30 runs off 30 balls.
Klaseen joined the likes of Quinton de Kock and Nicholas Pooran, who retired at their prime to serve as T20 agents. However, his fellow South African reversed his retirement to participate in the 2026 T20 World Cup.
What future holds for Heinrich Klaasen?
At 34, Heinrich Klaasen is still regarded as the best hitter of spin bowling. He is a key member of the SRH IPL 2026 squad, as the franchise acquired his services for a whopping INR 23 crore.
Apart from the IPL, Klaasen plays in the SA20, Major League Cricket, The Hundred and the Carribean Premier League.
He will be in action next on Sunday as SRH takes on the Lucknow Super Giants in their first home game of the season.
