England captain Harry Brook has backed Jos Buttler amid the latter’s form concerns in the ongoing 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. While speaking at a post-match press conference, Brook praised Buttler’s experience and called him the “best white-ball player to have ever played the game”.
It is worth noting that the former England skipper was dismissed for just seven off 14 balls against Sri Lanka on February 22, in match number 42 of the tournament at the Pallekele Stadium. The legendary wicketkeeper-batter is yet to notch up a single T20I half-century for England since their three-match home series against South Africa last September.

Harry Brook says Jos Buttler “lacking” confidence at the moment
Following his latest failure with the bat, senior England opener Jos Buttler has now received the backing of his captain Harry Brook. The English skipper praised his predecessor, and called him the “best white-ball” player of all time.
When asked about Buttler’s form concerns, Brook said “No concern at all. He's a powerhouse of world cricket. He has been for many years. He's arguably the best white-ball player to have ever played the game.”
The England skipper is also optimistic of Jos Buttler regaining his form just in time towards the business end of the tournament. Harry Brook added, “He's just lacking a little bit of confidence at the minute. But I'd rather him start the competition like this and finish with a flourish. So I'm looking forward and I'm really excited to see how he goes the next couple of games.”
Jos Buttler’s T20I woes worsen with each game
Jos Buttler, a veteran of 152 T20I matches, has been averaging just 16.83 since the conclusion of England’s home series against South Africa last September. Moreover, he has been averaging just 12 in the ongoing 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, having aggregated just 60 runs from five innings.
The legendary right-handed batter started off the tournament with a couple of 20s against Nepal and West Indies at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai earlier this month. In his last three innings combined, Buttler has listed just 13 runs against the likes of Scotland, Italy and Sri Lanka.
As of now, it remains to be seen if the 35-year-old can rediscover his touch as England heads forward in the Super 8 stage. In a bid to make it to the semifinals, Harry Brook and co. will need their most experienced campaigners firing at full throttle.
Bowlers script England’s escape against Sri Lanka
Jos Buttler was dismissed for just 7 against Sri Lanka in Pallekele in match number 43 of the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. The rest of England’s middle and top order, barring opening batter Phil Salt, also crumbled on the big Super 8 day as Harry Brook and co. charted just 146-9 in 20 overs. Salt aggregated 62 of those runs from just 40 balls with six fours and two sixes.
Fortunately for the Englishmen, bowlers Will Jacks (3-22), Jofra Archer (2-20), Liam Dawson (2-27) and Adil Rashid (2-13) all came to the fore to bundle out Sri Lanka for just 95. With England securing a comprehensive 51-run win in a low-scoring affair, they will now face Pakistan on February 24 in match number 45 of the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
