On Sunday, February 22, India locked horns against South Africa in their first match of the T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8 stage. In the ongoing match, Jasprit Bumrah scripted history as the right-arm seamer became India’s most successful bowler in the history of T20 World Cups.

Jasprit Bumrah picked up 3 crucial wickets for the Men in Blue, and with that feat, he took his World Cup tally to 33 scalps, making him the leading wicket-taker for India in World Cups.  Notably, he registered the figures of 3/16 in his four overs.

Bumrah Goes Past Ravichandran Ashwin With Ease

Prior to this match, Ravichandran Ashwin held the record for 32 wickets in 24 innings. Notably, the seamer took two fewer innings than the off-spinner to reach this feat. Here is the complete list of the most wickets for India in the T20 World Cups.

  • 33 - Jasprit Bumrah
  • 32 - Ravichandran Ashwin
  • 32* - Arshdeep Singh
  • 29 - Hardik Pandya

Bumrah completed the feat on the fifth ball of his fourth over, where he got the wicket of Corbin Bosch. Notably, the MI star took the catch off his own bowling. Earlier, the umpire didn't give the wicket, but India opted for a review and the replay showed that it was a clean catch.

Arshdeep Singh Nearly Pipped Bumrah For The Feat

Prior to the game, Arshdeep Singh and Jasprit Bumrah were fighting to beat Ashwin's record. Bumrah and Singh had 30 wickets, requiring only three wickets. Jasprit started the night with a wicket, followed by Arshdeep taking a wicket as well.

Bumrah returned for his 2nd over and took Ryan Rickelton's wicket, equalling Ashwin's record. Arshdeep Singh was not far behind as he too broke the crucial partnership and got the wicket of Marco Jansen to equal Ashwin's record.

Eventually, Bumrah beat Arshdeep to shatter Ashwin's record and now sits at the top of the pedestal with most wickets in T20 World Cup for India.

Jasprit Bumrah Goes Past Lasith Malinga In The Massive Feat

For the unversed, Jasprit Bumrah cleaned up Quinton de Kock by rattling his furniture. With that, Bumrah took his bowled tally to 44 in T20Is. He went past Lasith Malinga, who had 43 T20I wickets through bowled. Now, Bumrah has taken that title from the Sri Lanka legend.

Courtesy of Bumrah's heroics, India restricted South Africa to 187/7. However, in reply, the Men in Blue have got off to the worst possible start and lost two wickets in the first two overs. At the time of writing this article, India are 13/2 after 2 overs.

Shedding light on Bumrah's performance in this World Cup, then the right-arm seamer has turned back the clock to his 2024 T20 World Cup heroics. Notably, the right-arm seamer has seven wickets in four innings.
