Jos Buttler slammed by netizens [Source: X]
Veteran Jos Buttler, the 31-year-old prominent mast of England’s ship, has considerably struggled in this season of the T20 World Cup 2026. He has faced utter disappointment with the bat in this tournament while playing five matches for his team, and it was no exception in the England vs Sri Lanka Super 8 clash as well.
Jos Buttler was dismissed for just 7 runs after facing 14 deliveries before Dunith Wellalage sent him back to the pavilion. Buttler's continuous failures are now a worrying sign for the England team, which once had the T20 superstar on its side as a destructive pillar who even struck at 178.08 in his peak era.
Jos Buttler’s Struggles Are Visible And Prominent
Jos Buttler's struggles have been marked by several single-digit scores and modest knocks of 26 and 21 throughout the T20 World Cup. He failed to make a mark against Nepal as well as Italy and Scotland.
He played a decent knock against the West Indies with a 14-ball 21; however, his dismissal against Sri Lanka again marked the dip in form that he is displaying.
Notably, there has been a considerable change in his performance in T20I cricket over the years. During his prime, he struck at rates ranging from the 150s to 170s, but in 2025, Jos Buttler scored 480 runs from 15 matches.
The beginning of 2026 has been a disaster, as he has managed to score only 134 runs from his seven T20I appearances while averaging a low 19.14. However, this does not undermine his overall impact as an England batter who made his debut in the format back in August 2011 against India.

Netizens Slam Buttler’s Downfall Amid T20 World Cup Dip
Netizens have not taken this downfall lightly and started criticizing the 35-year-old on the internet after his failure against Sri Lanka. While Jos Buttler came in to open against the hosts, he was trapped LBW by Wellalage on the first ball of the fourth over.
Buttler misread an off-stump delivery of fuller length from Wellalage. He attempted a reverse sweep, but the ball crashed into his front pad.
After a strong appeal for LBW, the umpire raised his finger straightaway, and Jos Buttler decided not to review the decision, walking back to the pavilion and leaving England at 16 for 1 at the end of 3.1 overs.
Netizens immediately began lashing out at the cricketer’s performance online:
The Worrisome Top of England
Jos Buttler's form has been worrisome, and it has certainly made a significant impact on England's performance as well. In the first game against Nepal in this World Cup, Jos Buttler contributed only 14.13% of the team’s total with a 17-ball 26.
Against the West Indies, though he scored 21 runs, he was again among the lowest contributors with the bat. With less than 2% contribution in the Italy and Scotland clashes, Jos Buttler's form has become a serious concern for England.
Opening alongside Phil Salt, Buttler’s return to form in the upcoming clashes could significantly boost England's performance. Buttler was decent in the Sri Lanka series that England played just ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026, where he averaged 27.00 at a strike rate of 135.00.
However, his form has not carried into the mega ICC event. Nevertheless, with England still having many options to mix and match while backing Jos Buttler at the top, it will be interesting to see how long Harry Brook and co. continue to support the crippled veteran.
