India captain Harmanpreet Kaur didn’t mince words and indirectly blamed the team’s spinners after India Women suffered a crushing defeat to South Africa in Match No. 18 of the 2026 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in Manchester on Sunday, June 21.
After opting to bat first, Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma came out all guns blazing and raced to 23 without loss after just two overs. Moreover, India ended the Powerplay at a healthy 59/2. However, South Africa gradually fought their way back into the contest.
Marizanne Kapp removed Mandhana for 17, while Shabnim Ismail produced a fiery spell and dismissed Shafali Varma.
Meanwhile, Yastika Bhatia scored 15, Jemimah Rodrigues added 12, and Harmanpreet Kaur contributed 24 off 22 balls. Although the scoreboard kept ticking, wickets continued to fall at regular intervals. As a result, India eventually finished with 158/7.
Shree Charani Dominates Early Against South Africa
In reply, India struck early and looked firmly in control thanks to their spin attack. Shree Charani, in particular, was exceptional with the ball. First, she dismissed Laura Wolvaardt for 20. Then, just two balls later, she removed Annerie Dercksen for a duck.
Consequently, South Africa ended the Powerplay at just 25/2. However, Tazmin Brits and Marizanne Kapp refused to surrender. The duo added 97 runs for the third wicket in only 63 deliveries, steadily taking the game away from India.
Eventually, Shafali Verma broke the dangerous stand by dismissing Brits at 122/3 in the 17th over. Shortly after, Charani struck again by removing Nadine de Klerk.
At that stage, South Africa were 137/4 after 17.5 overs, and India still had a realistic chance of pulling off a victory.

However, the defining moment of the match came soon after. Radha Yadav dropped Marizanne Kapp when she was batting on 65. Soon after, the equation came down to 18 runs needed from the final 12 balls.
At this crucial juncture, Harmanpreet Kaur handed the ball to Deepti Sharma after a lengthy discussion.
Nevertheless, Kapp had already shifted gears. She smashed two huge sixes in the penultimate over, including a towering hit off the final ball. As a result, South Africa completed the chase in 19.1 overs.
Indian Spinners Fail To Deliver
While Shree Charani stood out with three wickets and Shafali Verma chipped in with one, the rest of India's spin attack failed to make an impact.
Prema Rawat and Deepti Sharma both went wicketless and leaked runs at economy rates of 10.50 and 11.00 respectively. Consequently, South Africa were able to maintain the required momentum during the chase.
Harmanpreet Kaur Puts Blame On Indian Spinners
Following the defeat, Harmanpreet Kaur openly praised Shree Charani and Shafali Verma. At the same time, she indirectly questioned the performances of the other spinners.
Speaking during the post-match presentation, she said: "I thought Shree Charani and Shafali bowled well. They created chances. But other bowlers did not support them."
Furthermore, she suggested that the remaining spinners needed to adapt better.
She said, "The ball was turning, if you use your fingers well. Shree Charani and Shafali Verma did well. Other spinners need to think about how to bowl on this wicket."
Meanwhile, this defeat has significantly dented India's chances of qualifying for the semifinals of the 2026 ICC Women's T20 World Cup.
As things stand, Harmanpreet Kaur's side now faces a must-win situation in their remaining group-stage fixtures. Any further slip-up could end their campaign.
