In a significant development, Rinku Singh could miss India’s upcoming all-important T20 World Cup match against Zimbabwe, set to take place in Chennai. The 28-year-old, as reported by PTI, missed the practice session at the Chepauk Stadium on Tuesday due to concerns about his father’s health (reportedly stage-4 liver cancer on ventilator support at present).
As reported by many, Rinku's father has been undergoing cancer treatment for almost a year. Things went south rapidly in recent times, and deteriorated condition led Rinku to take an emergency flight.
However, if things work well for Rinku, he could join the Indian camp before the Zimbabwe as well. For the safe side, it was spotted that Sanju Samson has started batting in the Chennai nets, a place which would be is home in the upcoming IPL 2026.
Rinku Singh Leaves India Squad; Sanju Samson In?
Notably, Samson was in India’s playing XI during the Namibia match, which took place in Delhi. There, he made 22 runs off just 8 balls while coming in the mix due to Abhishek Sharma’s injury. However, he is set to be in action once again if Rinku fails to return in time.
"Rinku Singh has gone back home for family emergency. He is not attending the practice session today," Kushan Sarkar, who works for PTI, tweeted.
With 24 runs across five innings, Rinku averages 8 in the ongoing T20 World Cup. His strike rate of 82.75 is equally questionable, and now, he is on the cusp of not getting chances to improve his numbers.

On the other hand, Rinku Singh’s family emergency could be a blessing in disguise for CSK's new recruit Sanju Samson, who has been desperately looking for an opportunity to succeed. If he comes in, the chances are high that he would bat at the top of the order, probably as an opener along with Abhishek Sharma.
India On The Spot Of Bother In T20 World Cup
India, meanwhile, are in all troubles in the ongoing T20 World Cup at home after a shocking 76-run defeat against last edition’s runner-ups South Africa. With the West Indies already securing a big-margin victory over Zimbabwe, the Men in Blue can’t afford any more slip-ups to stay in the semi-final race.
The biggest disappointment for defending champions India in the T20 World Cup was Abhishek Sharma. The southpaw secured three ducks in his first three outings before playing a sluggish 12-ball 15 against South Africa. The India must rectify a few things to turn things around, although the potential absence of Rinku Singh would be nothing but forced.
The SKY-led India will next play against Zimbabwe in the crucial Super 8 match on Thursday at M. A. Chidambaram Stadium. South Africa and the West Indies will go up against each other just before the game on the same day. Needless to say, both fixtures will be equally important for the T20 World Cup semi-finals fate.
