Just when India’s top order batters have been struggling in the ongoing T20 World Cup, Shreyas Iyer had a perfect opportunity to hit on the BCCI selectors’ faces on Tuesday. However, he could only make the chance go wasted, as the 31-year-old registered a golden duck in the DY Patil T20 Cup 2026.

Playing as a captain of the Bharat Petrolium Corporate Limited against Bank Of Baroda, Shreyas came to bat during the third over, when Bobby Yadav took the ball in hand. All the Punjab Kings skipper could do was hit the ball straight to deep backward point, making his stay look embarrassed due to a first-ball duck.

Unfortunately, a short delivery – something that bothered Shreyas Iyer for ages – that got his wicket, making the matter from bad to worse.

Shreyas Iyer Throws Away Fitting Response To T20 World Cup Snub

With Tilak Verma struggling to get going and Suryakumar Yadav not batting flawlessly, coupled with Abhishek Sharma misery, Shreyas could make the world watch what he could bring to the table. However, all he brought was disappointment to his ardent fans, as the BCCI selectors proved right in their decision of not including him in India’s T20 World Cup squad.

Shreyas Iyer To Be In Action For Punjab Kings During IPL 2026

Nevertheless, this won’t be Shreyas’ only opportunity to silence the BCCI selectors, as he will be in action soon when IPL 2026 begins. There, Shreyas will be captaining Punjab Kings, the franchise whom he took them to the final last year after a successful campaign with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

In IPL 2025, Shreyas batted brilliantly, making 604 runs across 17 innings at a whopping strike rate of over 175. Overall, he has been a consistent performer in India’s elite T20 league, aggregating 3731 runs in 133 matches, averaging 34.13. His best IPL campaign, though came last year only, where he averaged over 50 while leading a relatively younger Punjab-based side.

Needless to say, Shreyas’ response for the BCCI selectors could only be applicable if India fail to win the T20 World Cup 2026 at home.

Shreyas Iyer & His Prolonged Injury Concerns

Shreyas Iyer has been hit by injuries more often than not for a while now. Most recently, he suffered a serious spleen injury, which he suffered during the third ODI between India and Australia that took place in October last year.

He was later taken to hospital after that, and felt extreme pain before beginning his recovery journey. Of course, he made a resounding comeback to announce his return, smashing 49 against New Zealand during India’s ODI series opener earlier this year while coming to bat at his preferred No. 4 role in 50-over format.
