England Win, Shaheen Out And Tamim Iqbal As BCB President- June 7 Cricket Highlights

England defeated New Zealand in the first Test at Lord’s in London. Shaheen Afridi has been excluded from the PCB red-ball training camp. In other news, former captain Tamim Iqbal has been officially appointed as the president of the BCB.

Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news stories that emerged on Sunday, June 7.

New Zealand slip on WTC standings after England drubbing

England crushed New Zealand by 115 runs in the first Test at Lord’s to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Chasing 254, the visitors folded up for just 138 on Day 4. For England, fast bowler Ollie Robinson picked up seven wickets in the match.

While New Zealand slipped to number four on the WTC standings after the result, England remained at number seventh on the nine-team points table. 

Tamim Iqbal becomes new BCB president

Tamim Iqbal has been officially elected as the new president of the BCB. The former Bangladesh captain was appointed for the top role after winning the BCB election in Mirpur. In the same election, Fahim Sinha was elected as the new vice president of the BCB.

Tamim previously served as the BCB president on an interim basis after the removal of previous president Aminul Islam Bulbul earlier this year.

Shaheen Afridi left out of Pakistan’s red-ball camp

Pakistan senior fast bowler Shaheen Afridi has not been included in the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) red-ball training camp

Quite recently, the PCB announced separate red-ball and white-ball training camps at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), and selected 49 players for preparation.

The red-ball camp will be held between June 8 and 10 in a bid to prepare Pakistan players for the upcoming Test series against West Indies and England. 

Mohammad Saleem Safi takes 6 against India

Afghanistan fast bowler Mohammad Saleem Safi completed a stunning six-wicket haul against India on Day 2 of their one-off Test in New Chandigarh. The speedster dismissed Shubman Gill, Dhruv Jurel and Mohammed Siraj to seize figures of 6-140.

Team India still ended up mounting 564-8d in 127 overs before captain Gill declared the innings. In response, Afghanistan reached 113-5 by stumps on Day 2 as they trail Team India by another 451 runs.

T20 World Cup 2026 Captains Carnival takes place in England

Mere days prior to the launch of the 2026 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, the ‘Captain’s Carnival’ of the tournament was organised by the ICC in England on June 7. Captains of all 12 competing teams attended the event, alongside ICC chairman Jay Shah. 

Notably, at one stage of the event, Shah even shook hands with Pakistan Women’s captain Fatima Sana, drawing some sharp reactions from fans in light of India’s ‘no handshake’ policy with Pakistan.
