Manav Suthar enjoyed stellar success in his debut Test, as he dismantled the Afghanistan batting unit with a sensational six-wicket haul.

In India's ongoing one-off Test against Afghanistan, Suthar ran through the visitors with a sensational spell, thus breaking an elite 47-year-old cricket record set by Dilip Doshi.

After winning the toss and electing to bat first, the Indian team posted a massive total, riding on valiant centuries from KL Rahul and Shubman Gill. Rishabh Pant and Sai Sudharsan contributed 81 runs each, as the home team declared their first innings on 564 for eight on day 2.

In response, Afghanistan lost wickets at regular intervals, eventually getting bundled out for 152 runs. While ace speedster Prasidh Krishna bagged three wickets, Manav Suthar emerged as India's wrecker-in-chief with the ball on his Test debut.

The left-arm spinner showcased remarkable discipline, justifying why the Indian team management picked him over Harsh Dubey

He dismissed Abdul Malik and Rahmanullah Gurbaz early in the innings before getting rid of Afsar Zazai, Sharafuddin Ashraf, Rahmat Shah and Mohammad Saleem Safi.

Thus, Manav Suthar finished his spell with magical figures of six for 33, breaking Dilip Doshi's record for the best bowling spell by a left-arm spinner on Test debut.

Manav Suthar breaks Dilip Doshi's elite 47-year-old record

Former Indian cricketer Dilip Doshi made his Test debut against Australia in Chennai back in 1979. He took six wickets for 103 runs, holding the record for the best bowling figures by an Indian left-arm spinner on Test debut.

So, as soon as Manav Suthar bagged his sixth wicket in Afghanistan's first innings, he overtook the talismanic cricketer and etched his name in history books.

Best bowling figures by Indian left-arm spinners on Test debut

  • Manav Suthar- 6/33 vs Afghanistan, Mullanpur, 2026
  • Dilip Doshi- 6/103 vs Australia, Chennai, 1979
  • Axar Patel- 5/60 vs England, Chennai, 2021
  • Kuldeep Yadav- 4/68 vs Australia, Dharamsala, 2017
  • Ravi Shastri- 3/9 vs New Zealand, Wellington, 1981

Interestingly, Manav Suthar and Dilip Doshi are the only Indian left-arm spinners to register six-wicket hauls on their debut Test match.

Axar Patel, who claims the third position, bagged a five-wicket haul against England in his first Test. Meanwhile, Ravi Shastri is the only cricketer from the five-member list to take three wickets on debut in an overseas Test.

Manav Suthar can be Ravindra Jadeja's long-term replacement

Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja served as the backbone of the Indian bowling lineup, leading the team to 18 consecutive Test series wins on home soil.

While Ravichandran Ashwin was eventually replaced by Washington Sundar, India were searching for a suitable candidate to succeed Ravindra Jadeja on a long-term basis.

Manav Suthar not only scalped six wickets, but also showed glimpses of his batting talent in the one-off Test against Afghanistan. Coming to bat at number eight, Suthar struck two boundaries and as many sixes for a quick-fire 41-ball 28.

So, considering his potential to thrive as a potent all-round option, we believe India can groom Manav Suthar as Ravindra Jadeja's long-term replacement in Test cricket.
