In a significant development, England captain Harry Brook sealed Jos Buttler's fate for the remainder of the T20 World Cup 2026. Buttler, who led the Three Lions to their second T20 World Cup win in 2022, has found it incredibly tough to get going in this year's tournament, letting his team down with a string of low scores.

Statistically, Jos Buttler has managed just 62 runs across seven innings, including five consecutive single-digit scores. Amid Buttler's prolonged lean patch, English captain Harry Brook has given a massive statement, revealing whether the Three Lions will drop him in the semifinal.

Jos Buttler registers a duck in ENG Vs NZ

Former England captain Jos Buttler had a topsy-turvy start to the T20 World Cup 2026, managing 47 runs across the first two innings. While the English side expected him to spearhead their batting lineup, Buttler fell flat in the subsequent matches, aggregating 15 runs across five innings combined.

The swashbuckling opener looked far from his best against New Zealand, as Lockie Ferguson got his prized scalp for a duck in the second over. Having said that, his poor outing didn't cost England the game, with Will Jacks and Rehan Ahmed propelling them to a morale-boosting win before the semifinal.

Harry Brook indicates Jos Buttler will play despite horrible T20 World Cup run

Meanwhile, despite Jos Buttler's horrendous batting form, England captain Harry Brook confirmed that the former wouldn't sit out in their upcoming matches.

After the Englishmen pipped New Zealand in a thrilling clash in Colombo, Brook lauded Buttler's prowess as a match-winner in T20Is in the post-match press conference.

The English skipper, who blazed his way through to a magnificent century against Pakistan, reckoned that Buttler, being a genuine match-winner, could play a key role for the team in the remaining matches.

As Brook put it, Jos Buttler still brings a lot of experience and value to the table; so, the Three Lions would persist with him, hoping for a turnaround from his blade in the all-important semifinal.

"Well, I think that there has lot of talk about Jos. I said the other day that he has played 150 games for England and people need to probably take a step back from that. He is probably the best white ball player to ever play the game. He is in a little bit of a poor run now but that's something everyone goes through. We know what he can produce in the next couple of games. He's obviously got a lot of fire in the belly and he wants to go out there and show everybody what he's made of. He averages 34, striking at 145 in 150 games. He is a phenomenal player and I have no doubts about that," Harry Brook said.

England in semis, New Zealand at loggerheads with Pakistan

Had New Zealand won their final Super 8 match against England, Pakistan would've marked their exit from the T20 World Cup.

However, as the Kiwis ended up on the losing side, Pakistan have a final opportunity to qualify for the semifinal by either beating Sri Lanka by 65 runs or chasing a 141-run target inside 13 overs.

On the other hand, England have already entered the semifinal and will face either India or the West Indies at the Wankhede Stadium.
