The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has shown the world that cricket can be become a commercial success as well. This comes after it ranked 16th amongst the world’s richest sporting organizations. It stood well ahead of the likes of the Bundesliga, NASCAR, and Serie A.

The rankings for 2025 were revealed by Two Circles, based on new to ecosystem revenue generation. The top 20 rankings were dominated by the National Football League (NFL) at no.1, the National Basketball Association (NBA) at no.2 and the HK Jockey Club coming in at no.3. This means the presence of the BCCI in this elite list, is a huge landmark moment for the game of cricket.

BCCI’s financial power stands out

Cricket remains limited in geopolitical reach when it is compared with football or basketball, given that these sports are followed by millions of fans worldwide. BCCI has managed to match and even go ahead of several huge sporting organizations in revenue generation, despite cricket facing several limitations.

BCCI's presence in these rankings shows its strong financial standing, with estimated revenues in the north of $1.6 billion and showing a healthy 21% growth rate estimate. This also shows India’s rise as an sporting economic powerhouse and that cricket has starting expanding itself when it comes to revenue as well.

History of BCCI

The BCCI is a private, independent organization that is not governed by the Indian government and does not get funding from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. The men’s and women’s senior cricket teams and men’s and women’s U19 cricket teams come under the purview of the BCCI.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was formed in Madras (present-day Chennai) on 1 December 1928. Several state cricket associations came together to form the BCCI and elect its president. R. E. Grant Govan was the first BCCI president, and Anthony De Mello was its first secretary.

The BCCI had joined the Imperial Cricket Council as a member in 1926 and organized its first domestic cricket competition, the Ranji Trophy, in 1936. India became a Test-playing nation in 1936, while still under British rule.

IPL is BCCI’s biggest revenue generator

One of the biggest innovations in cricket competition came when in 2008, the BCCI announced the first edition of the Indian Premier League. It involved all of India’s international and domestic cricketers, along with several foreign players as well, who were attracted by the money it offered.

Since then, the IPL has become the biggest revenue generator for the BCCI, revolutionizing not only the cricketing scene but also making the BCCI a global economic superpower. The tournament now commands viewership numbers comparable to premier global sporting events.

Apart from its huge impact on the cricket economy, ticket sales, and TV and digital rights revenue, the IPL has formed a cricket ecosystem that feeds Indian domestic cricket and helps grassroots cricket and women’s cricket. It is one of the major reasons why BCCI’s revenue growth is pegged at 21%, the highest in the list.

BCCI’s growing stature means cricket is becoming a commercial success

The BCCI's ranking of 16th amongst the world’s richest sporting organizations is a huge win for the game of cricket.

It has proven that cricket can be marketed in an effective way, supported with a passionate fan base, and has the ability to compete with the best sports in the world when it comes to commercial well-being.
