Former Australian opener David Warner could lose his captaincy due to a serious off-field situation. He was recently charged with drink-driving in Sydney and is set to face legal action soon.

Warner is one of Australia’s most celebrated cricketers. He retired a few years ago but is still active in franchise leagues, including BBL and PSL. However, this off-field controversy could soon impact his on-field career.

David Warner could lose Sydney Thunder captaincy

Earlier this month, David Warner was caught drink-driving in Sydney, as his blood alcohol level was allegedly 0.104, which is more than twice the legal limit in Australia.

As a result, he was taken to a police station and will appear in court on May 7. At this stage, these are legal allegations, but the situation is significant enough to trigger action from cricket authorities.

Warner is currently the captain of Sydney Thunder in the BBL since he was reinstated as a leader after his long ban from the 2018 Australian ball-tampering scandal was lifted.

Now, Cricket NSW, which owns the Thunder, has a major partnership with Transport for NSW, which actively promotes road safety campaigns. It also has ties to Sydney Thunder, as the franchise even plays a “Road Safety Cup.”

So having your captain charged with drink-driving directly clashes with that message and is bad for the optics.

Cricket NSW hints at captaincy turmoil

After the drink-driving case was exposed, Cricket NSW chief executive Lee Germon hinted that David Warner may lose his captaincy for Sydney Thunder in the BBL.

Germom said the allegations were concerning and are being taken seriously. On the captaincy of Sydney Thunder, he said it remains to be seen and will be decided in due course.

'I can't say too much (about Warner's alleged drink-driving incident) because of the legal side of it. The allegations, of course, are concerning, and we take them very seriously. Bear in mind, at the moment, there are allegations, and the Sydney Thunder captaincy will be worked through in due course,” Germon told reporters.

While the officials are not making any immediate decision, the uncertainty alone signals how precarious his position has become.

David Warner returns to the PSL despite the legal case

That being said, despite the drink-driving case, David Warner was allowed to return to PSL 2026 as Karachi Kings captain. He featured in the April 9 game against Peshawar Zalmi but was dismissed on a golden duck.

However, Warner didn’t feature in the next game against Hyderabad Kingsmen due to back pain. Moeen Ali walked out instead as the stand-in captain.

Karachi Kings will next face Islamabad United on April 16 at the National Stadium, and it will be interesting to see if David Warner returns to the field.
