Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir has made a special request to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Notably, the former Indian opener took charge as head coach in 2024, and conversations around him continuing as Indian Head Coach have since been in the news.
Before becoming India’s head coach, Gambhir had already built a strong reputation in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He worked as a mentor with teams like Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Under his guidance, Lucknow reached the playoffs twice in a row. Later, he helped Kolkata Knight Riders win the IPL 2024 title.
Because of these achievements, the BCCI chose him as India’s head coach after Rahul Dravid stepped down.
Gautam Gambhir makes big demand
Recently, reports suggest that Gautam Gambhir wants his contract as India’s head coach to be extended. At present, his contract runs until the 2027 ODI World Cup. However, he is now asking for it to be extended until the 2028 T20 World Cup, which will be held in Australia.
This request shows that Gautam Gambhir is thinking long-term and wants to build a strong team for future tournaments.
Another important point is Gambhir’s choice for the T20 captain. He reportedly still supports Suryakumar Yadav as India’s T20 captain. Suryakumar recently led India to victory in a major T20 tournament, which strengthens Gambhir’s belief in him.
However, this decision may not be straightforward. By the time of the 2028 Olympics, Suryakumar will be around 38 years old. This raises questions about whether he will still be fit and effective at that level. The selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, will play a key role in deciding this.

Can India Afford Gautam Gambhir’s plan?
Now the bigger question is: can India afford to accept Gambhir’s demands? On one hand, India have done very well in white-ball cricket under him, including winning the Champions Trophy 2025 and T20 World Cup 2026.
On the other hand, the team has struggled badly in Test cricket. India faced heavy criticism after losing two home Test series, including defeats against New Zealand in 2024 and South Africa in 2025.
Bold decisions taken under Gautam Gambhir's era
Additionally, there have been tough decisions regarding senior players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Reports suggested that they were forced out of the Test setup as their performances declined.
Notably, the team management, led by Gambhir, had to make some big calls. As a result, India began moving on from these two modern greats and started focusing on building a new team for the future.
At present, India are ranked sixth in the World Test Championship WTC points table. They have played 9 matches, winning 4, losing 4, and drawing 1, with a points percentage of 48.15. In comparison, Australia are leading the table with a much stronger performance.
Therefore, while Gambhir’s long-term vision is clear, the BCCI might carefully decide whether his plan is the right path for India’s future.
