David Miller rolled back the years on Wednesday night in Delhi as the Delhi Capitals fell short by an excruciating 1 run against the Gujarat Titans in IPL 2026. Batting with an injured hand, Miller, who was retired hurt earlier in the match at 12(10), went hammer and tongs upon returning to the field and left the GT bowlers clueless with his range hitting.

Chasing the 211-run target, the DC openers got off to a flier with a 76-run opening stand before Pathum Nissanka was dismissed for 41 (24). However, as they set themselves up for a comfortable chase, Rashid Khan ran all over their middle order, picking 3/17 (4) to force Miller in at 101/3.

After David Miller went back to the hut to treat his injured hand, KL Rahul, with his blistering form, approached his century and looked poised to see the chase through. However, he fell for 92 (52) with 11 fours and four sixes, and what followed was nothing short of a drama, as the game went to the final ball of the 20th over.

After going back to treat his hand earlier in the innings, Miller walked back inside to help his team chase the target at the end of the 17th over after KL Rahul’s wicket. The team needed 45 off 18, and Miller looked in his vintage avatar, scoring 23 off the 19th over, followed by a huge six off Prasidh Krishna in the last over.

When the equation came down to DC needing 2 runs in 2 balls, David Miller shockingly denied a single to avoid a defeat and later missed a perfectly executed slower bouncer from Krishna, and Kuldeep Yadav was run out, trying to take a run off the bye.

Following the defeat, the players consoled Miller, but the southpaw was seen emotional in the DC dressing room. Head coach Hemang Badani gave the batter a hug for his valiant 41*(20) with three fours and three sixes to stage an epic run-chase despite his injury.

Miller’s brain-fade gets questioned

David Miller’s denial of a single at 19.5, when 2 were needed from the final two balls of the match, received a fair bit of questioning from the fans and experts after the end of the game.

In most events, where David Miller bats through in the chases, he has exhibited his great game awareness to see the team through over the years. However, this time around, as Miller pulled Kirshna towards the square leg, instead of avoiding a defeat and assuring a super over at least, the batter sent Kuldeep back, who was halfway through the pitch.

With GT getting a slow over-rate penalty, only 4 players were outside the 30-yard circle, and the Proteas star finisher backed himself to get the win for DC, but things went south, and a potential masterstroke move turned into a brain-fade.

DC start IPL 2026 strong

Despite a close loss at home against GT, the Axar Patel-led DC outfit has looked in some great form in the early days of IPL 2026. Courtesy of two match-winning fifties from Sameer Rizvi and a good bowling attack, they defeated the Lucknow Super Giants by 6 wickets, followed by another 6-wicket win over a strong Mumbai Indians side.

After three matches, with two wins and a loss, they sit fourth on the table, with a healthy net run-rate of +0.811.
