CA finalise central contracts for 2026/27 [Source: AFP]
In the latest development around Australian cricket, Cricket Australia has finalised the list of players to be centrally contracted for the 2026/27 season, following their Ashes 2025/26 glory and a shock T20 World Cup exit.
Shockingly, from the injury-laden pace attack, one of Australia's Ashes heroes is set to be released from the central contracted players list, with a high-intensity year of international cricket scheduled.
Ashes winner to be released from CA central contracts
Currently, the frontline pace trio of the Test captain Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood are out of IPL 2026 action as they have been advised to be rested by the CA medical team, considering the busy international schedule ahead. However, despite some fitness concerns, the three remain central figures of their plans for the foreseeable future.
The fourth pacer for a while, Scott Boland, is also highly likely to retain his spot in the roster after exhibiting consistency in performances as well as staying fit, despite being on the wrong side of 30s.
Shockingly, according to Code Sports, Jhye Richardson, who made a long-awaited return to international cricket during the Ashes, is likely to be dropped from the list ahead of their tours to South Africa. Notably, despite playing his last international game in June 2022, Jhye Richardson remained in the list every season till 2025/26.
The decision comes as a surprise to many because, for the longest time, Richardson has been considered among the next-generation star pacers of Australia, with most frontline bowlers well into their 30s. The right-arm quick has had a fair share of right shoulder issues, going under the knife as many as three times due to the issues.
However, the Test return and the subsequent presence in the Sheffield Shield came in as a positive for the bowler, and he was touted to be the mainstay for the coming years in the team.
Having made his debut in 2017 as a prodigy, Richardson has played 4 Tests, 15 ODIs and 18 T20Is in 9 years so far. He has been impressive for the most part, picking 59 wickets in 41 international innings.

CA decides Michael Neser and Todd Murphy’s fate
Rewarding the consistency shown by Michael Neser in recent years, he got to play three Ashes Tests this summer and did not disappoint in the absence of Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood. He picked 15 wickets with his tight bowling, including two four-fers and a 5/42 to his name. He is set to be named among centrally contracted players for 2026/27.
Todd Murphy, who last played a Test in Sri Lanka in 2025, before being dropped from the squad, will also be backed in the CA’s central contract list despite carrying drinks at the SCG and MCG during the Ashes. Despite Nathan Lyon’s injury, Murphy remained on the sidelines, while the Aussies went with an all-out pace-attack at a rather spin-friendly SCG.
Matthew Kuhnemann is another spinner who will be in the central contracts, with the tours to Bangladesh and India to happen in the next year. Both Todd Murphy and Kuhnemann will be around the setup, with spin-friendly conditions in mind.
Connolly and Khawaja vacate spots; Green gets coach’s approval
After a substandard T20 World Cup for Cooper Connolly, scoring only 14 runs and remaining wicketless, the left-arm orthodox bowling allrounder will vacate a spot in CA’s central contracts. He will be joined by the recently retired Usman Khawaja among the absentees.
Coach Andrew McDonald has shown faith in Cameron Green’s all-round ability despite back issues in recent times, and he will be among the prominent names in the list as well. As things stand, the names of Jake Weatherald and Matthew Renshaw are under assessment, considering the uncertainty around their places in the team.
