Monday night marked an evening of mixed emotions for the Chennai Super Kings legend Ravindra Jadeja, who made his second debut for the Rajasthan Royals, 17 seasons since his last match for them. As fortunes would have it, his return in RR colours came against the Super Kings, who traded him out ahead of IPL 2026.

As both RR and CSK opened their IPL 2026 campaign in Guwahati, the five-time champions looked clueless throughout the match against a young RR team. Much like their concerning IPL 2025, they got bowled out for 127, which is when the CSK fans saw an unseen side of Ravindra Jadeja, guarding one of the boundaries.

While Jadeja's performance with the ball against CSK was as good as ever, with RR completely decimating the Men in Yellow on the evening, some fans also noticed a different side of Jadeja.

After a cracking powerplay with the ball for RR, Jadeja bowled the 7th over of the first innings and scalped two key wickets of Sarfaraz Khan and Shivam Dube, who tried to take him on. Eventually, Jadeja ended with a spell of 2/18 in 3 overs and helped his team gain the first points of the season.

After his animated wicket celebration, with a chip on his shoulder to do well against CSK, when the camera panned towards Ravindra Jadeja later in the first innings, the former CSK man notably looked emotional. For the first time after 12 years of association, he wasn't there to bail his old team out of trouble, quietly hurting on the boundary.

As he looked visibly emotional at CSK's dreadful start to the season, the CSK fans took note of it and rallied behind their cult hero and expressed similar emotions of longing for him on social media.

Ravindra Jadeja's legacy with CSK

The southpaw first played for CSK back in 2012, when they were coming off two successive IPL title wins in 2010 and 2011. He immediately started making a mark in yellow, forming a famous tandem with Ravichandran Ashwin, dominating the middle overs, while also finishing off the matches with the bat.

His first title with the Super Kings came in the Champions League T20 2015 and eventually also won the IPL on three occasions with them in 2018, 2021 and 2023.

He played a crucial role in all four title wins with them, playing 200 matches for them, equalling Suresh Raina for the joint-second most appearances. He scored 2354 runs in 149 innings for them, including the famous winning runs of IPL 2023 final and picked 152 wickets with the ball, only two behind Dwayne Bravo.

In 2022, he was also named as CSK's captain for a brief period, becoming only their third captain since 2008 after the currently injured MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina. He captained them in 8 matches, winning two and losing 6.

New beginning for Jadeja in IPL 2026

At 37, Ravindra Jadeja has returned to the Rajasthan Royals, where it all started for him as a teenager in 2008. He was famously termed as a rockstar by the late great Shane Warne as they lifted the inaugural IPL with Jadeja scoring 135 runs at a strike rate of 131.06 β€” high at the time, while bowling only twice in the season.

Following the trade, the challenges are new for Jadeja, as he will have a huge responsibility to lead RR back to glory for the first time since 2008. Despite being a T20 World champion, he is being led by Riyan Parag and has a unique opportunity to create a special legacy for himself outside the yellow of CSK.
