Cricket Australia chief selector George Bailey has addressed the issue of contractual negotiations between the big-name Australia players and the cricket board.

This comes after he unveiled the Australia squads for the ODI series in Pakistan and the white-ball series in Bangladesh.

This announcement was made by Cricket Australia on May 11, 2026, as Australia is set to play three ODIs in Pakistan from May 30 to June 4.

Then Australia will move to Bangladesh, where Australia will play 3 ODIs and 3 T20Is versus Bangladesh from June 9 to June 21.

Big three pacers set to miss Pakistan and Bangladesh tours

The big three pacers, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc, and Pat Cummins, will miss both the tours. All the three pacers are part of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2026) tournament.

Hazlewood is playing for table toppers Royal Challengers Bengaluru; Starc plays for Delhi Capitals, while Cummins is captaining Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Out of these three teams, RCB and SRH are in the race for the playoffs in IPL 2026, while DC needs a miracle to finish in the top four.

Cricket Australia has chosen not to bring back any IPL players. Australia's full-time ODI captain is Cummins, while Starc has retired from T20Is.

Mitchell Marsh, the full-time T20I captain, will captain the ODI team in Cummins' absence. Marsh is now playing for the Lucknow Super Giants, who have already been eliminated from the playoffs, but he is also in the IPL.

George Bailey downplays tensions between senior Australian players and Cricket Australia

The chair of selectors in Australia While acknowledging that "there is tension in the marketplace" as players attempt to balance national obligations and franchise cricket, George Bailey claims that a handful of senior players' decision to reject their initial contract offers from Cricket Australia (CA) is "normal at this time of year."

As per reports, five senior players were not impressed by CA's initial contract offers last week. The tension centred on the financial offers, the ratio of guaranteed money to match payments, and whether the players would have more freedom with NOCs to play franchise cricket when they are either instructed to rest or when franchise tournaments coincide with bilateral red-ball and white-ball cricket.

"I actually think that's pretty normal for this time of year. I think one of the things that's important to understand is that we offer our national contracts up at the end of April, and the key reason for that is to unlock the state contracting process and allow states to go forward with certainty, knowing who they have on national contracts and then what space that allows and money that allows for their state players. But the actual contract doesn't kick in until the end of June, the first [week] of July,” Bailey was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo.

Pat Cummins highlight how Australian players will miss out on big pay day to play Tests for the country

"There's this tension in the marketplace, if you want to put it that way. But I think we're pretty fortunate. We've got a group of players that continue to be passionate about playing cricket for Australia, and I think they understand that performing well for Australia is still your best way to put yourself in the shop window for some of those franchise opportunities,” Bailey added.

Cummins himself noted that playing Tests against Bangladesh in August will cost them a chance to earn upwards of A$675,000 (US$485,000) to play in the Hundred.

There was a group of white-ball players—Tim David, Glenn Maxwell, and Adam Zampa—who missed the Hundred last year to play T20I cricket for Australia.
