Nicholas Pooran’s poor form in IPL 2026 was one of the biggest talking points from the Lucknow Super Giants’ forgettable campaign, where they became the first team to be knocked out of the tournament.

After playing 11 matches, they have won 3 and lost 8, sitting at the bottom of the points table. For a large part of the season, their all-time leading run-getter Pooran could not connect bat to the ball, until he was off the hook against the Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium, scoring 63(23).

Nonetheless, he still has only 184 runs in 11 innings at 124.32, which has played a major role in their early elimination. As they crash out of the season, the LSG Director has revealed details of their planning for the season and why Pooran struggled to get going.

Nicholas Pooran played IPL 2026 with injury, confirms Tom Moody

Addressing the issue over their star player’s form, Tom Moody spoke about an injury Pooran was nursing heading into the season, while also spilling beans on captain Rishabh Pant’s aspirations of batting at 3.

Pant had notably struggled for form while batting at number 4 in IPL 2025, when he only scored 269 runs at 133.16 with a fifty and a knock of 118* against RCB. The century had come in the final match of the season, when he had batted at 3.

“Rishabh (Pant) was keen to bat three this year, so we afforded him that opportunity. Nicky P (Pooran) came into the tournament with a sore wrist that needed some sort of management in the first week or two. Generally, around the world in T20 cricket, Nicky P bats anywhere from three to five. He's been effective in all those roles,” he said.

“I think for him, his season started slowly, more to do with his preparation and also the fact that he came in with a bit of a wrist injury. He's fine now. As we've seen over recent games, he's suddenly found that flow again,” Moody added.

Nicholas Pooran's poor show in IPL 2026

Currently, Pooran has 184 runs at a strike rate of 124.32 in IPL 2026, and he has breached the fifty-run mark only once. Apart from his 63(21), he has only gotten 121 runs off 127 balls, which looks even worse if we put aside the 38(23) in the subsequent match against RCB.

Since LSG’s inception, he was pivotal in their two runs to the playoffs, predominantly batting at 3. Despite this dull season, he has 1565 runs for LSG in 54 innings at a strike rate of 173.50, which speaks volumes about what the southpaw brings to the table for them.

LSG to spoil the party of CSK, RR and PBKS?

The Super Giants now only have three matches remaining in the group stage of IPL 2026. Considering they are already out of the tournament, they still have something to salvage this season with all three fixtures against the team aiming for a top-4 finish.

They face CSK and RR next, both teams at 5 and 6 are on 12 points in 11 matches and are competing for the top-4.

Finally, they will face PBKS, who are on 13 points in 10 matches and aspire for a Qualifier 1 (top-2) finish. LSG can dampen the spirits in any of these camps with some spirited performances to end the season on a high note.
