Ahead of the third and final ODI of the series against Afghanistan, India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate provided positive injury updates on stars like Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan.

India have already sealed the series with an unassailable 2-0 lead. The third ODI, scheduled on June 20 at the Chepauk Stadium in Chennai, will serve as an opportunity for the hosts to complete a whitewash and wrap up the tour on a winning note.

Ishan Kishan, Shubman Gill fit for the third ODI

Hours before the third ODI took place at Chennai, India’s assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate attended the pre-game press conference. He confirmed that captain Shubman Gill, who suffered from severe cramps during the second ODI, is fit and available for selection.

Apart from Gill, Ishan Kishan also sustained a shoulder injury in Lucknow. However, upon further assessment, it was learned that the niggle was not serious, and Kishan recovered well after batting. Hence, there are no concerns regarding his fitness.

"Shubman, yes, [is fit]. Just the heat the other day — he was cramping in his calves a little bit, but he’s absolutely fine. Ishan’s shoulder is fine; he recovered well after batting,” Doeschate said.

Also, Nitish Reddy missed the previous game because of minor soreness, but he is fit to play the third ODI. His fitness is crucial, as India intends to groom him as a potential replacement for Hardik Pandya for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

India to rest Arshdeep Singh

Interestingly, Ryan ten Doeschate suggested that left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh may miss the third and final ODI in Chennai. He has taken five wickets in two matches at an impressive average of 14.40.

However, the assistant coach indicated that India are planning changes for the dead rubber after taking an unassailable 2-0 lead. He said Arshdeep could be given a rest as part of managing workloads.

“No, we will be making a few changes from the first two games. Someone like Arshdeep has bowled very well in the first two games; he can probably take a rest tomorrow, and the same goes for one of the batters,” he added.

The third ODI gives India a chance to test their bench strength. The management has already confirmed that multiple changes are likely. Apart from Arshdeep, one batter is also expected to be rested.

Harshit Rana added to the squad

In another crucial update, fast bowler Harshit Rana has been added to India’s ODI squad for the Afghanistan series just ahead of the finale in Chennai.

Rana makes a comeback after spending around five months in rehabilitation at the BCCI CoE. He last featured in the T20 World Cup 2026 and missed the IPL 2026 season due to an injury.

However, Harshit Rana is not expected to feature in the third ODI. He has just been added to the squad to resume practice and get into the groove of international cricket.
