Australia overcame a spirited Bangladesh side by seven runs in the second T20I of their three-match series in Chattogram. The outcome helped the Mitchell Marsh-led visiting troops go 2-0 up to seal the series with a game to spare.
In the process, the Australia cricket team also scaled a significant landmark, previously achieved by no other Australian side in history.
Australia overcome 2021 demons, record history over Bangladesh
Australia’s ongoing three-match T20I series in Bangladesh marked only the second T20I bilateral series between the two sides. Back in August 2021, Australia toured Bangladesh for a five-match rubber to play their first-ever T20I series against the cricket-crazy South Asian nation.
With Mitchell Marsh and co. winning the second T20I of their ongoing tour on Friday, June 19, Australia has now registered its first-ever T20I series win over Bangladesh, either home or away.

Previously, Australia lost its five-match T20I tour in 2021 by a crushing 1-4 margin. Each of the remaining six T20I meetings between the two sides have occurred in T20 World Cup events.
Remarkably, among all Test playing nations they have played a T20I series, England remains the only country where Australia is yet to record a T20I series win. It is worth noting that Australia is yet to play a bilateral T20I series in Zimbabwe, and is yet to face Ireland and Afghanistan in the format outside T20 World Cups.
Matt Renshaw, Nathan Ellis douse Bangladesh in second T20I
Winning the toss and opting to bat first, Australia lost openers Josh Inglis, Mitchell Marsh and number three Cooper Connolly all inside the powerplay to slip to 44-3. Matt Renshaw and Tim David shared a counterattacking 97-run partnership for the fourth wicket, with the latter clubbing two fours and four sixes in his fiery 26-ball 45.
Renshaw top-scored in the innings by blazing away to 89* from just 52 balls with four boundaries and five sixes in Chattogram. Joel Davies also notched up some crucial runs at the death as Australia mounted 196-5 in 20 overs.
In response, Bangladesh raced to 72-1 at the end of the opening powerplay. However, tight spells from Nathan Ellis (1-27), Matt Renshaw (1-13), Joel Davies (1-21) and Adam Zampa (1-39) restricted Bangladesh to 189-6. Aaron Hardie also chipped in with two wickets as Australia walked away with a seven-run win in a high-scoring thriller.
Australia aims for whitewash, Bangladesh to play for pride
With a 2-0 lead in the bag, the Australian cricket team has already sealed the three-match T20I series with a game to spare. The two teams will now square off in the dead-rubber third T20I at the Bir Shrestho Flight Lieutenant Matiur Rahman Cricket Stadium in Chittagong.
The match will be played on Sunday, June 21.
Australia will be aiming to win the impending third ODI to record a rare 3-0 sweep in Bangladesh. For hosts, Towhid Hridoy and co. will be looking to avoid a home whitewash.
