The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is on the verge of introducing a new national selection panel, set to be led by a certain former Bangladesh captain. Notably, the appointment process this time is expected to follow a more structured and nuanced approach, marking a clear departure from the conventional selection methods employed in previous panels.
Earlier, the BCB used to appoint members in the national selection panel on the basis of the board’s higher-up observations. However, the board will be taking interviews of the interested candidates this time around before forming a four-member committee.
BCB impressed and finalizes candidates for selection panel
As reported by Cricbuzz, the BCB is already impressed with a few candidates that have given their respective interviews for joining the national selection panel. Notably, the interview panel consist of BCB vice-president Faruque Ahmed, BCB cricket operation chairman Nazmul Abedin and BCB director Khaled Mashud along with several other board members.
The report also indicated that the panel will be led by former Bangladesh captain Habibul Bashar. Interestingly, Bashar also previously served the BCB as a national selector in a three-member committee alongside fellow ex-cricketers Akram Khan and Minhajul Abedin.
The legendary Bangladesh cricketer will likely be joined by former batter Naeem Islam and Nadif Chowdhurty. Hasibul Hossain will remain the other member of the panel after Gazi Ashraf Hossain confirmed his exit as Bangladesh’s chief selector.
BCB chairman explains changes in new selection panel
With the BCB conducting interviews of interested candidates to finalize its new selection panel, the board has moved away from its previous approach of relying solely on the observations of its top officials.

Another notable change in the composition of the new selection panel has also been introduced by the board this time around. Unlike previous national selection panels which featured three members, the new selection panel reportedly consists of four members, as stated above.
While speaking with Cricbuzz, BCB cricket operation chairman Nazmul Abedin explained that there is no specific rule that indicates that the selection panel must have three members.
Abedin said “There is no hard and fast rule that the selection panel will have to be a three-member committee. We will form the selection panel as per our requirements.”
Bangladesh to host New Zealand after PAK win, World Cup fiasco
One of the primary tasks of the new national selection panel will be to assemble a Bangladesh squad for the upcoming white-ball series against the visiting New Zealand team. The two teams will be facing each other in a series of three T20Is and three ODI matches between April 17 and May 2 next month in Mirpur and Chattogram.
The series will mark Bangladesh’s first since recording a rare 2-1 ODI series win over a Shaheen Afridi-led Pakistan side earlier this month in Mirpur.
All of this also unfolds in the lingering shadow of Bangladesh’s contentious self-exile from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 in India and Sri Lanka last month citing “security concerns”, a controversial call that raised serious questions around the cricketing world.
