18 years ago, in 2008, the inception of IPL brought an unprecedented revolution in the dynamics of T20 cricket, the modern-day format. The most expensive franchise cricket league began as a blend of cricket and glamour, alongside providing the highly competitive platform for the cricketers across the world.

Meanwhile, winning an IPL trophy has always been a dream for all the participating teams since the tournament’s inaugural edition. However, there have been very few teams that have lifted the title across 18 seasons of the tournament so far.

On the other hand, some other teams are still waiting to clinch their maiden IPL title.

Teams with most trophies in IPL history

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) - 5

Chennai Super Kings have been the most successful team in the tournament's entire history, with five titles to their name. Besides that, they have appeared in the tournament’s final on 10 occasions, the most for any team in the league’s history.

CSK have won all the five titles under the captaincy of former skipper and the legendary wicketkeeper-batter, MS Dhoni. The yellow outfits won their first title in the 2010 season, followed by the second one in the very next season in 2011.

Later, they clinched the title in 2018 and 2021, followed by the latest one in 2023. Notably, CSK has won five titles in just 16 seasons, having been banned from the tournament for the 2016 and 2017 editions due to a spot-fixing controversy.

Mumbai Indians (MI) - 5

After facing setbacks in the first five editions of the tournament, the Mumbai Indians won their first title in the 2013 edition, under former skipper Rohit Sharma’s captaincy. Furthermore, Rohit led them to win four more titles in 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020.

Interestingly, MI's rate of converting final appearances into titles is the best among all teams. They have qualified for the finals on six occasions and lifted the title five times. Having five titles in 18 seasons, the Mumbai Indians rank second in the list of teams with the most trophies in league's history.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) - 3

After ending their campaigns without a title in the first four seasons of the tournament, KKR bounced back brilliantly in the tournament’s fifth edition in 2012. The team was led by the former India opener Gautam Gambhir. KKR won their first title, defeating CSK by 5 wickets in the 2012 final.

Just two years later, in IPL 2014, KKR clinched their second title after registering a three-wicket win against PBKS in the final. This title win for KKR also came under Gambhir’s leadership. After 10 years of winning their second title, KKR roped in Gautam Gambhir as mentor ahead of IPL 2024.

The Shreyas Iyer-led team ended their title wait for a decade with a massive eight-wicket win against SRH in the final. It was the third and most recent title win for the Knight Riders in the tournament’s history.

Rajasthan Royals (RR) - 1

It was the first-ever edition of the IPL, when former Aussie great, Late Shane Warne, was leading the Rajasthan Royals. They were initially considered underdogs in the tournament, given that most of the faces in their squad were unrecognised, except for skipper Shane Warne.

Nonetheless, Warne’s men surprised everyone and continued dominating all the teams throughout the entire inaugural season. Eventually, RR won the title defeating CSK by three wickets in the summit clash at the Dr DY Patil Academy in Navi Mumbai.

Deccan Chargers Hyderabad (DCH) - 1

After finishing the bottom half of the points table in IPL 2008, the Deccan Chargers Hyderabad made a stunning comeback in the tournament’s second season in 2009.

The Adam Gilchrist-led side finished in fourth spot in the tournament standings at the end of the group stage, with seven wins and seven defeats in their 14 games. Gilchrist-led side comfortably made it to the final, where they defeated RCB by a thrilling margin of six runs to lift their first and only title in the league's history.

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) - 1

Under the captaincy of former Australian great David Warner, the Sunrisers Hyderabad enjoyed an amazing run of form in IPL 2016. They were third in the points table at the group stage’s conclusion, with eight wins and six defeats in their 14 fixtures.

Furthermore, they defeated KKR by 22 runs in the eliminator to qualify for the second qualifier, where they outplayed the Gujarat Lions by 4 wickets. In the tournament’s final, David Warner’s men took on RCB. SRH posted 208 runs for the loss of seven wickets in the allotted 20 overs.

Later in the second innings, SRH restricted RCB to the score of 200 runs for the loss of seven wickets, winning the game by a narrow margin of just eight runs. With this win, SRH won their maiden title in the tournament’s history.

Gujarat Titans (GT) - 1

The 2022 edition of the tournament marked the debut of two newly added teams on the roster, the Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants. Both the teams displayed an amazing game, qualifying for the knockouts in their first-ever IPL appearance.

LSG’s journey ended with a 14-run defeat against RCB in the eliminator clash. On the other hand, the Gujarat Titans had already qualified for the final after beating RR in the first qualifier. RR qualified for the final with a seven-wicket win over RCB in the second qualifier.

In the summit clash, the debutant Gujarat Titans completely outplayed the Royals to win the game by seven wickets and lift the title in their first-ever appearance.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) - 1

Besides facing a string of exits from the tournament’s group stage or the knockouts, RCB narrowly missed the title on three occasions, losing the final by small margins. But last year, in 2025, RCB’s 17-year-long wait for an IPL title across 17 editions finally came to an end in IPL 2025.

In the final of the previous edition, Rajat Patidar-led RCB defeated the Punjab Kings by six runs to win their much-awaited IPL title, bringing happiness to their fans after more than a decade of setbacks.
