In a major cross-league move, US-based businessman Fawad Sarwar, owner of Hyderabad’s newest franchise in the PSL, has expanded his footprint into the Caribbean. After securing the seventh PSL team ahead of the 2026 season, Sarwar has now acquired the Jamaica franchise in the CPL.

The Jamaica-based franchise, once home to some of the biggest global T20 stars, has not featured in the league since the 2023 season. After going inactive, the team has been awaiting clarity over its future. Fawad Sarwar’s takeover now signals a fresh chapter, with plans to relaunch and rebuild the side in the CPL.

Interestingly, Sarwar did not secure the deal uncontested. He has beaten an established IPL team owner in the race, underlining his growing influence in franchise cricket. The acquisition marks a bold statement of intent as he builds a growing multi-league T20 presence.

Delhi Capitals co-owners miss out on Jamaica CPL franchise despite being early favourites

The GMR Group, co-owners of Delhi Capitals in the IPL, were widely considered the frontrunners to acquire the Jamaica-based CPL franchise in recent times. As reported by ESPN Cricinfo earlier, the GMR Group had shown serious intent and were reportedly in advanced discussions to relaunch the Jamaica team in CPL.

GMR officials even attended the CPL final last year, strengthening reports that they were close to sealing the deal. Many believed the group would soon become the seventh ownership entity in the league, potentially increasing the number of fixtures.

With investments in IPL,  ILT20, Major League Cricket, English county cricket, and The Hundred, GMR’s expanding cricket portfolio made them strong favourites. However, despite the momentum and expectations, the franchise ultimately slipped out of their grasp.

PSL franchise owner edges past Delhi Capitals to secure Jamaica franchise

After spending PKR 1.75 billion to secure the Hyderabad franchise in the PSL, Fawad Sarwar named the side Hyderabad Houston Kingsmen, officially marking his entry into PSL. The significant investment underlined his vision of building a multi-league presence under the unified “Kingsmen” brand.

He has now taken that ambition to the CPL, beating the Indian counterpart, co-owners of Delhi Capitals, to acquire the Jamaica-based franchise. While financial details of the new deal remain undisclosed, the team’s new identity is expected to revolve around “Kingsmen,” maintaining brand consistency across his growing cricket ventures.

New era beckons for Jamaica franchise in CPL

Once a dominant force in the CPL, the Jamaica Tallawahs, three-time champions and one of the league’s original six teams, have been absent for the past two seasons. T20 icons like Chris Gayle and Andre Russell once defined their golden era.

Unfortunately, the franchise was sold back to the league in 2023 by former owner Kris Persaud, who cited limited government backing as a key reason. He later acquired rights to a new team, now known as the Antigua and Barbuda Falcons.

With fresh investment in Sabina Park and renewed administrative support, the stage is set for revival. Under Fawad Sarwar’s ownership, a new era now begins, with hopes of restoring Jamaica’s pride in one of the world’s most celebrated T20 leagues.
