Crossing 400 in ODI cricket was once considered a near-impossible feat, but the evolution of modern batting has transformed it into a regular figure. With the rise of the T20I mindset and batting-friendly conditions, 400 has increasingly become the new 300 in One-Day cricket.

Team India and South Africa are among the most frequent visitors to the 400-run club. Here, we take a look at four teams with the highest number of 400-plus totals to their names in ODI matches.

3. Australia – 3 times

The Australian cricket team has recorded three totals in excess of 400 runs in ODI matches. Under the leadership of Ricky Ponting back in 2006, Australia also notched up the first-ever 400-plus total in ODI history by mounting 434-4 against South Africa in Johannesburg.

Unfortunately for the then world champions, the record for the world’s highest ODI total at the time stood for just a few hours as South Africa ended up pulling off a heist for the ages.

Australia registered its second-ever 400-plus total nearly a decade later during the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup in Perth against Afghanistan. An epic 178 from David Warner in the match helped Australia decimate Afghanistan by a record margin of 275 runs.

Australia’s third instance of a 400-plus total occurred in a dead rubber against South Africa in Mackay in August 2025, by charting 431-2 courtesy of centuries from Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh and Cameron Green.

2. England – 7 times

The England cricket team has notched seven totals of 400 or more runs in ODI cricket, all since the conclusion of the 2015 ICC World Cup. The Englishmen have charted five of those totals in home conditions, and one each in the West Indies and in the Netherlands.

Notably, three of England’s seven 400-plus totals also happen to be the three highest men’s team totals in the history of the format, which includes scores of 498-4 against the Netherlands in 2022, 481-6 against Australia in Nottingham in 2018, and 444-3 against Pakistan at the same venue in 2016.

Just last year, England charted two 400-plus totals, one each against the West Indies in Birmingham and against South Africa in Southampton.

Among teams with more than one 400-plus total, England is also one of only three sides in history to have not lost a single match after crossing the mountainous figure, having won each of its seven games so far.

1. India and South Africa – 8 times each

Team India did not start the 400-plus trend in ODIs. But the ‘Men in Blue’ have certainly popularised the landmark figure with some remarkable batting feats.

The Indian team first breached the threshold in a 2007 World Cup game against Bermuda by charting 413-5, to record the first-ever such total in a 50-overs World Cup match.

A couple of years later, India and Sri Lanka produced a spiritual sequel to the SA vs AUS 434-438 game in Rajkot, with the hosts edging out the visitors by just three runs in a major final-over plot twist.

Between February 2010 and November 2014, the only three instances of 400 runs being recorded in an ODI were all conjured by India in home conditions, with each occasion featuring a momentous double century from Sachin Tendulkar (vs SA in Gwalior), Virender Sehwag (vs WI in Indore) and Rohit Sharma (vs SL in Kolkata).

An Ishan Kishan double century in Bangladesh in December 2022, and a World Cup 2023 special against the Netherlands in Bengaluru stretched India’s 400-run domination in the format.

In June 2026, a Shubman Gill-led Indian side notched up its eighth total of 400 or more, doing so against Afghanistan in Lucknow.

Much like India, the South Africa cricket team has also recorded eight totals of over 400 runs in 50-over internationals. One of those totals occurred in a match-winning cause while batting second, thus marking the highest successful run-chase in ODI history.

In a gap of just two months in early 2015, the Proteas cracked up three 400-plus totals, including two against the West Indies courtesy of a couple of AB de Villiers’ blinders, and another against Ireland at the 2015 World Cup.

South Africa also mounted a record 438-4 in India in 2015, with their next four threshold totals all occurring between 2023 and 2025 in four different countries against three different opponents. Much like England and India, the Proteas are also yet to lose a single match after mounting a total in excess of 400.
