The stylish Indian batter, who is also the captain of the side in both ODIs and Tests, smashed a century off 77 balls, becoming one of the fastest centurions as Indian captains ever in the ODIs.

4. 77 Balls By Shubman Gill vs Afghanistan, Lucknow 2026
Shubman Gill’s 77-ball century was the fifth fastest century among Indian captains. He was at his absolute best against Afghanistan after coming to bat at No. 3, a place where Virat Kohli bats in the format.
Notably, Gill is still going strong at the time of writing, batting on 134 off 93 balls, with 20 fours two sixes.
3. 76 Balls By Rohit Sharma vs England, Cuttack 2025
While coming to chase 305 against England, the then-India captain Rohit Sharma made 119 off 90 balls, which had seven sixes and 12 fours. There, Rohit took 76 balls to get to the three-digit mark, a ball fewer than how many Shubman Gill took on Wednesday.

Eventually, Rohit was named the Player of the Match in that match, as India chased down 305 in just 44.3 overs.
3. 76 Balls By Virat Kohli vs Sri Lanka, Colombo RPS 2017
Just like his partner-in-crime Rohit, Virat Kohli took exactly 76 balls to secure his fastest ODI hundred as India captain. The match happened in Colombo against Sri Lanka back in 2017. Interestingly, Rohit also smashed a century in that match.
Kohli, meanwhile, made 131 runs in 96 balls in that match, winning the Player of the Match award. India, eventually, won the five-match ODI series against Sri Lanka 5-0 in that assignment.
2. 69 Balls By Virender Sehwag vs West Indies, Indore 2011
Virender Sehwag, captaining India in Indore, helped India pile 418/5 during the West Indies tour of India 2011. It is the highest team total by India till today, and Sehwag made 219 off 149 balls to make it happen.
Sehwag only took 69 balls for his first century, and it was the third-fastest ODI hundred as India captain. No wonder Sehwag was awarded the Player of the Match, as India registered a 153-run victory after restricting the West Indies to 265.
1. 63 Balls By Rohit Sharma vs Afghanistan, Delhi 2023
The record for the fastest ODI hundred as India Captain is currently held by Rohit Sharma. Rohit smashed the century against Afghanistan during the World Cup 2023, in a match they were chasing 273.
Rohit remained unbeaten on 131 off 84 balls, which included five sixes and 16 fours, at Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi. In that match, Rohit only took 63 balls for his century, keeping the record under his name.
