Nikhil Chaudhary made his international debut for Australia on Wednesday, June 17 in Bangladesh. With an understrength Australian team taking on Bangladesh in the first T20I of their three-match away series in Chattogram, the team management handed Chaudhary his maiden international cap.

With the latest feat, the 30-year-old became only the second India-born cricketer to play an international match for Australia, and the first to do so in over 60 years after Rex Sellers. Celebrating Chaudhary’s landmark moment, here is a look at the exact reason behind the cricketer’s shift to Australia.

Why Nikhil Chaudhary moved from India to Australia?

Nikhil Chaudhary, born in Delhi, spent a major part of his early career for Punjab’s youth cricket teams. He represented the Punjab team in U16, U19 and U23 levels and also played few matches for the senior Punjab side in Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

However, Chaudhary got his first taste of first-class cricket in Australia, his adopted country.

His journey took an unexpected turn when he decided to try his luck in Australia during a family holiday back during the COVID era. As per his own admission, the cricketer stayed back in Australia even after the COVID restrictions were lifted, calling it the best decision of his life.

During an interview with the Times of India last year, he said “It was all God’s plan. I have no regrets in saying that staying back in Australia changed my life, my cricket. If I had been in India, my cricket career would have been a mess. You know how it works. Talent and performance don’t matter; you need strong recommendations to play cricket.”

Since moving to Australia, the former Punjab cricketer has performed odd jobs like cutting vegetables at a restaurant and that of a courier at Australia Post. It was during his club cricket stint for Northern Suburbs when his talent caught the eye of former Australian all-rounder James Hopes, who recommended him to BBL franchise Hobart Hurricanes.

Is Nikhil Chaudhary Australian or Indian?

While Nikhil Chaudhary was born Indian, he is now a permanent Australian resident and meets the ICC eligibility criteria through residency.

The same eligibility made him a serious potential for landing an Australian debut, thus becoming the first Indian-born cricketer to do so since Rex Sellers did it in 1964. Chaudhary eventually realized that dream on Wednesday, June 17 by playing first international match for Australia, doing so against Bangladesh in Chattogram.

Is Nikhil Chaudhary in IPL?

During his time at Punjab, Chaudhary trained under legendary Indian cricketers like Yuvraj Singh and Harbhajan Singh. However, his career never led to a selection in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

According to reports, the all-rounder once took part in an unsuccessful trial for the Mumbai Indians franchise

Can Nikhil Chaudhary play for India?

Technically yes, but the possibility remains a distant one. Under ICC regulations, players can switch national teams after fulfilling certain eligibility criteria, including a mandatory stand-down period and nationality requirements. However, such moves are relatively uncommon, especially involving two Full Member nations like India and Australia.

What team does Nikhil Chaudhary play for?

Before making his Australia debut in international cricket, Nikhil has been playing for the Hobart Hurricanes in the BBL. He also recently played unofficial T20 cricket for the JB Bruges team in EUT20 Belgium.

In domestic competitions ‘Down Under’, Chaudhary plays for the Tasmania cricket team. However, it all began for the Australian all-rounder during his time with Punjab’s age-group sides in India.
