Why Captain Shubman Gill Can Be The Ace Up India's Sleeve On His Maiden Sri Lanka Tour

Shubman Gill will be leading and taking the responsibility of guiding India's Test side for the Sri Lanka tour after being handed the burden back in May 2025. However, the captaincy that many feared would weigh him down has instead unlocked the finest phase of the Punjab-born’s red-ball career.

India's upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka will be Gill's first assignment as Test captain in the subcontinent. While Sri Lanka's spin-friendly conditions have historically challenged even India's greatest captains, Gill enters the tour with a unique advantage. 

He is arguably batting better than ever before, and more importantly, his game against spin has undergone a remarkable transformation. Hence, there’s a possibility that captain Shubman Gill becomes India's biggest weapon in Sri Lanka. Let’s take a look at the numbers for a better understanding.

Captaincy Has Coincided With Shubman Gill's Batting Peak

The biggest positive for India is that captaincy has elevated Gill's batting rather than affecting it negatively.

Before becoming captain, Gill averaged just over 35 in Test cricket. Since taking over the leadership, his average has skyrocketed to 82.76. 

In merely nine Tests as captain, he has already scored more centuries (six) than he managed in 32 Tests without the leadership burden.

His numbers become even more astonishing at his new batting position.

This includes marathon knocks of 269, 161 and 147, proving that Gill has quickly adapted to batting as India's new No. 4.

Sri Lanka Hasn't Been A Happy Hunting Ground For Indian Captains

However, history presents Gill with a significant challenge. Batting as India's captain in Sri Lanka has rarely been straightforward.

The fascinating trend is that every Indian captain except Sachin Tendulkar averaged lower in Sri Lanka than their overall Test batting average as captain.

Virat Kohli, despite dominating nearly every overseas destination, averaged 43.77 in Sri Lanka as captain. MS Dhoni, Sourav Ganguly and Mohammad Azharuddin also couldn't produce numbers close to their overall standards.

The reason is simple. Sri Lankan conditions are unlike anywhere else. As the pitch deteriorates, batting becomes increasingly difficult against quality spin. Captains often arrive at the crease against an older ball and attacking spinners, making run-scoring a far tougher task than elsewhere.

Hence, the question remains, “can Shubman Gill become only the second Indian captain after Sachin Tendulkar to outperform his overall captaincy average in Sri Lanka?” The answer perhaps lies in one crucial area.

Gill's Transformation Against Spin Makes Him India's Biggest Hope

Sri Lanka's greatest threat will undoubtedly come through spin, especially with Prabath Jayasuriya expected to exploit the turning conditions. Fortunately for India, Gill's improvement against spin has been dramatic over the last few years.

While Gill averaged only 38 against spin during the early years of his Test career, he now averages over 51. More importantly, his consistency has improved drastically, with eleven fifty-plus scores against spin since 2023 compared to just one before that.

His dot-ball percentage has also reduced from 71.1% to 67.1%, indicating that he is rotating strike more effectively instead of allowing spinners to build prolonged pressure.

For someone expected to bat at No. 4 in Sri Lanka, this evolution could prove invaluable, as the team alongside Gill will take the field on August 7 for a practice match with the hosts.

Captain Shubman Gill has been invincible against spin

The captaincy effect becomes even more evident once Gill's numbers against spin are isolated.

Gill has been dismissed only four times by spin in 11 innings as captain, averaging a staggering 107.2. Instead of merely surviving against slower bowlers, he has controlled them, scoring at nearly a run-a-ball every ten deliveries while consistently batting for long periods.

That becomes particularly significant because Sri Lanka are expected to test him with spin for extended spells once the new ball loses its shine.

If these numbers are any indication, Gill appears better prepared than ever before to tackle that challenge.

India's Biggest Strength Could Be Their Captain

Leadership usually brings additional pressure, but for Shubman Gill, it has brought greater clarity. His batting has reached unprecedented levels since taking charge, his game against spin has evolved considerably, and his ability to occupy the crease at No. 4 gives India the stability they desperately need in challenging overseas conditions.

However, Sri Lanka remain one of the toughest places in Asia for visiting captains. The likes of Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni and Sourav Ganguly all found that out despite being among India's finest leaders.

Gill's recent numbers suggest he has every chance of following Sachin Tendulkar's footsteps, but statistics alone will not guarantee success. Sri Lanka's spinners, led by Prabath Jayasuriya, possess the skill and patience to expose even the smallest technical flaw.

India will therefore hope that the captaincy continues to bring the best out of Shubman Gill. If it does, the 26-year-old could well be the ace up India's sleeve in a series where a batting collapse for the visitors might be expected.
