In a shocking development, former Bangladesh cricket captain Shakib Al Hasan's house was attacked by unidentified mobs on Wednesday night. 

Shakib, who virtually attended a press conference alongside former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in India, saw a group of unidentified people allegedly throw bombs at his house in the Keshabmor area of Magura town at around 8:45 pm local time on Wednesday night.

Petrol Bomb Thrown At Shakib Al Hasan’s Ancestral House

The former Bangladesh Awami League MP, Hasan, has faced many controversies due to his involvement in politics while playing cricket. However, he distanced himself and left the country to avoid any controversy that could physically affect him. 

Despite that, petrol bombs were allegedly thrown at Hasan's ancestral residence, as per media reports, in retaliation for Shakib's support for Sheikh Hasina in Bangladesh.

“A grisly petrol bomb attack took place at the residence of Bangladesh’s celebrated cricket icon Shakib Al Hasan, hours after the world famous star cricketer appeared at a press conference with honourable party president Sheikh Hasina. 

Ahead of the press conference, BNP, Islamist Jamaat and NCP all publicly threatened national media outlets to weaponise judiciary to sue in case of reports of the press conferences,” Hasina's party said in a post on X.

It is to be noted that the attack has not been verified yet, and there has been no immediate reaction from the authorities in Bangladesh.

Was Shakib Al Hasan At His Home During The Bombing?

Shakib is currently not at home. He is also not in Bangladesh as of August 6, 2026. He has been playing in the Lanka Premier League for Jaffna Kings since July 17 and had just played the qualifier against Galle Gladiators, where he also picked up one wicket. 

So far in the tournament, Shakib has managed to scalp nine wickets from eight innings while bowling at an economy rate of 8.44 and a strike rate of 16.00. Shakib has been playing franchise cricket since 2024, with his last stint before LPL 2026 being in Major League Cricket, where he featured for MI New York. 

Hence, Shakib Al Hasan's home might have been bombed, but he is safe outside Bangladesh. 

Why Did The Bombing At Shakib’s House Take Place?

There has been severe unrest and public anger against Shakib, which stems primarily from his political career as a member of parliament for Sheikh Hasina's Awami League. 

Shakib joined Hasina's party and won a seat in the 2024 general election. However, that was not the trigger. During the violent student-led uprisings and protests that sent the whole of Bangladesh into shock, Shakib remained silent and showed a lack of empathy for the victims of the state crackdown. 

This led to public anger towards Hasan, and following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government, Shakib was named in an FIR in a murder case related to police violence against protesters. Regulatory bodies also froze his bank accounts amid investigations into alleged stock market manipulation and money laundering, which further aggravated public anger. 

Now, Bangladeshi citizens, who despise Hasina's return to the country, have allegedly taken violent revenge against Shakib Al Hasan for still showing his support for Hasina by attending the virtual meeting, which was held by Hasina in Delhi at a Foreign Correspondents' Club of South Asia event. 

There, Hasina said that the 2024 student protest was not peaceful and that her exile was forced and driven by violence under the guise of reform organised by student groups. Nevertheless, Hasan's attendance at Hasina's meeting silently signalled the cricketer's support for the former prime minister, which allegedly led to the petrol bombing of his house.
