West Indies are now in a very difficult position in the race for the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2027 following their home series defeat to Sri Lanka.
The ODI World Cup will be hosted in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia in October and November 2027.
Moreover, the West Indies' qualification chances for the 14th edition have reduced sharply after recent results in international cricket.
Setback For West Indies After ODI Series Loss Against Sri Lanka
Notably, West Indies suffered a major setback following the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka. As a result, their position in the qualification race has weakened.
Sri Lanka showed their class in the first ODI with Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis playing wonderful innings. Sri Lanka managed to reach 303 for 7. West Indies fought back with good knocks from Justin Greaves and Shai Hope, however they failed to complete the chase and lost by 11 runs.
After the first match, West Indies hoped to recover in the remaining games. However, the next two ODIs were washed out due to rain. Therefore, the series ended 0-1 in favor of Sri Lanka, which further affected West Indies’ ranking momentum.
West Indies’ Remaining ODI Fixtures
Meanwhile, West Indies still have a few ODI series left in their calendar. First, they will face New Zealand in a three-match ODI series at home in July.
In addition, they will tour India later in the year for another three ODIs. Furthermore, they are scheduled to host Afghanistan in 2027 for three ODIs as well.
West Indies Ranking Situation On ICC Points Table
Currently, West Indies are placed 10th in the ICC ODI team rankings, having dropped from 9th position. In total, they have played 32 ODIs since the 2023 World Cup cycle, winning 11 matches, losing 18, and having a few no results.

As a result of the Sri Lanka series, they remain on 73 points, which keeps them under pressure in the qualification race.
How World Cup Qualification Works
It is important to note that the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2027 will feature 14 teams in total. Firstly, South Africa and Zimbabwe will qualify automatically as hosts.
Secondly, the top eight teams in the ICC ODI rankings as of March 31, 2027, will secure direct entry, excluding the hosts.
Meanwhile, the remaining four spots will be decided through a global qualifying tournament in 2027. This tournament will include teams from Cricket World Cup League 2 and other qualification pathways.
At present, teams such as India, New Zealand, Australia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, England, and Bangladesh are in commanding positions within the top ICC rankings.
What Are West Indies' Chances To Qualify?
Therefore, West Indies must aim to stay inside the top eight to qualify directly. If they finish 9th or lower, they will have to play the global qualifier tournament, which is highly competitive and includes ten teams fighting for only four World Cup spots.
In that situation, every remaining ODI becomes extremely important and results from other teams will also influence their chances.
Earlier, in the 2023 World Cup, the Men in Maroon faced a similar situation. Consequently, they failed to qualify directly and had to play the qualifying tournament.
Unfortunately, they suffered defeats against Scotland and the Netherlands. Similarly, they have also missed out on ICC Champions Trophy editions in recent years.
