Shai Hope has established himself as one of the best ODI players from the West Indies. Few batters have been as consistent as Hope in this format at the moment.
Even last night, the West Indies captain played a timely 87-run knock to guide his team home against New Zealand in Guyana. This innings was again a reminder of how good he has been in recent times, particularly in ODIs.
Shai Hope’s marvellous consistency
Since 2025, Shai Hope has 813 runs at an average of 62.53 and a strike rate of 97.24 in 17 ODI innings. Additionally, he has hit six fifties and two centuries.
Among batters with at least 15 innings in this period, Hope’s average ranks fourth-best among full-member nations. He also has the fourth-most 50+ scores.
What makes his numbers more impressive is that two of the three batters with higher averages, Virat Kohli and Joe Root, bat in the top three. However, Shai Hope has batted in the middle order, mostly at No.4, and still found ways to be effective.
Shai Hope has been among the most consistent batters
Since last year, Hope has played in various conditions - England, Bangladesh, New Zealand, and Ireland - away from home. But he has still adapted in all these nations and has been a heavy run-scorer across conditions.
He was magnificent in New Zealand, averaging a whopping 81, and doing a decent job in Ireland and Bangladesh. At home, Hope has been unstoppable, with 350 runs at an average of 116.66 and a strike rate of 96.15 in five outings.
Hope’s middle-order mastery
Shai Hope is naturally a top-order batter. He started his ODI career as an opener and did reasonably well in the role for a long time.

The Caribbean batter opened in 49 ODI innings, scoring 2612 runs at an average of 60.74 and a strike rate of 79.31 from 2017 to 2022. Moreover, Hope hit 11 fifties and as many centuries.
However, he relinquished his opening spot for other batters and shifted to the middle order, but his returns didn’t dwindle. Hope is too good a player to not succeed outside the opening slot.
Since shifting permanently to the middle order in 2023, Shai Hope has averaged 57.29 and struck at 95.07 in 46 outings, with 11 fifties and six centuries. His best has come at No.4, where he has 1833 runs at an average of 59.12 and a strike rate of 95.96 in 41 innings.
Shai Hope has aced both roles
No other middle-order batter from a full-member nation has a better average or more 50+ scores than Shai Hope in this period. It’s a remarkable achievement for a top-order batter in an uncharacteristic position over such a long duration.
Why has Shai Hope found ample success in the middle order?
A major reason Hope has been a success in the middle order is his proficiency against spin. He’s always been a quality spin player, and batting in the middle order has allowed him to face more spin overs.
Since 2025, Hope has averaged 89.50 and struck at 90.63 against spinners in ODIs. Additionally, he has hit a boundary every 11.96 deliveries.
Among all batters with at least 250 balls in this period, Hope’s average is the second-best, only after Daryl Mitchell’s 94.20. Meanwhile, his strike rate stands seventh on the list.
Hence, it’s unsurprising that his numbers in the middle overs are tremendous. In this period, Hope has scored 59.66 runs before every dismissal and maintained a strike rate of 89.94 between overs 11 and 40.
It’s hard to find a more complete middle-order batter than Hope at the moment. His smooth transformation into a middle-order batter has given the West Indies so much flexibility.
Batting outside the top three is usually a tougher role, but he has hardly looked unconvincing. His presence has also allowed the West Indies to try different players, such as Brandon King, John Campbell, and Alick Athanaze.
Shai Hope is their most crucial batter and has peaked at the right moment. West Indies need to win a lot more to qualify for the 2027 World Cup, and Hope is their biggest hope for a ticket to cricket’s biggest tournament.
