The BCCI Centre of Excellence was set up two years ago in Bengaluru, as the board established a state-of-the-art facility for the Indian players. Almost two years after setting up the high-performance hub, CoE head VVS Laxman, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia, and President Mithun Manhas attended a press conference to talk about CoE achievements.

During the same press conference, CoE head Laxman talked about India’s current injury crisis and how the CoE makes sure that every player follows the guidelines set by them, even during the off-season.

In the presser, Laxman was grilled on the number of injured players in the Indian team, as several have been injured while working with the CoE medical team.

The former India cricketer revealed that the BCCI Centre of Excellence has a method of tracking players’ activities, as they use GPS to gain the information.

"We use the GPS, whatever the player is doing, we have the information."

However, an injury to Harshit Rana recently exposed Laxman’s statement, as the CoE failed to detect his increase in body weight, which led to a hamstring injury on the UK tour.

Harshit Rana's injury contradicts Laxman's statement

Harshit Rana, India’s star pacer, was injured before the T20 World Cup 2026, and he had to miss the World Cup, and the IPL 2026 for the Kolkata Knight Riders.

He had a long rehabilitation process, and after missing a couple of months of cricket, Harshit made his India comeback during the India tour of Ireland and England. However, midway through the England T20Is, the pacer sustained a hamstring injury and was ruled out of the tour.

After he got injured, a PTI report stated that during his rehabilitation in CoE, the pacer gained a considerable amount of weight, which resulted in his hamstring injury.

He featured in just five matches before getting ruled out of the tour. Now, the question arises: Wasn’t his recovery process monitored at CoE? Wasn’t his weight checked at CoE before giving him the clearance? Why the bowler wasn't monitored on a daily basis? This injury contradicts Laxman’s statement.

What reasons did Laxman gave for India's increase in injury crisis

The head of CoE, Laxman, also gave an insight into why so many Indian players have sustained injuries in recent months as he defended the work done at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence.

There was a lot of criticism directed at VVS Laxman for India’s injuries, and the veteran player stated that the centre is not for rehabilitation, but to achieve excellence.

“Centre of Excellence is not a rehabilitation centre. It’s a centre where we strive for excellence every day," remarked VVS Laxman.

"Injuries are part and parcel of any player's career. That's why a monitoring system is very critical. And we don't use the term blame then we will be trying to find scapegoats," Laxman on spate of injuries."

The 134 Test match veteran mentioned that India doesn't have a head of sports science since 2025, when Nitin Patel left. It is a major reason behind the recent rise in injuries within the Indian team.
