India returned to ODI cricket with high expectations, but England won the three-match series 2-1 after winning the final game at Lord’s by 27 runs on July 19.
While India comfortably won the opening match by 6 wickets, England bounced back strongly in Cardiff (4 wickets) before sealing the series with a dominant batting display in the decider.
There were several positives for India, especially from the batting unit, but the bowling attack struggled to stop England's aggressive approach in crucial moments. With the ODI World Cup 2027 in mind, the series offered several lessons for the team management led by Gautam Gambhir.

Indian Players' Rating After England ODIs
Shubman Gill - 9/10
Runs: 188, Matches: 3, Average: 94.00 , SR: 99.47
Indian captain Shubman Gill was India’s best performer in the recently concluded IND vs ENG ODI series. Leading the team for the first time in England, he handled both the captaincy and batting responsibilities well.
Gill scored 188 runs in three matches at an average of 94 and a strike rate of 99.47. He began the series with an unbeaten 80 before retiring hurt. The star player managed only 31 runs off 30 balls in Cardiff, but bounced back with another classy 77-run knock at Lord's, sharing a 147-run opening partnership with Rohit Sharma.
Virat Kohli - 8.5/10
Runs: 144, Matches: 3, Average: 48.00 , SR: 109.09
Virat Kohli had a slow start but improved with every game in the IND vs ENG ODI series. After getting out cheaply in the 1st ODI for just 5 runs, the experienced batter looked much more comfortable in the remaining two matches.
He scored 65 in the 2nd ODI when India needed stability and followed it up with a fluent 74(60) at Lord’s while chasing a huge target of 387. Overall, Virat Kohli made 144 runs in 3 matches at a strike rate of 109.09.
Rohit Sharma - 8/10
Runs: 175, Matches: 3, Average: 58.33 , SR: 98.31
Rohit Sharma finished the series on a high despite struggling initially in the India vs England ODI series. He managed only 11 and 26 in the first two matches, leading to criticism and retirement rumours.
However, he answered his critics with a magnificent 138 off just 110 balls at a strike-rate of 125.45 in the final ODI at Lord's. His innings included aggressive stroke play and excellent timing, giving India hope during the massive chase of 388.
Prasidh Krishna - 7/10
Wickets: 5, Matches: 3, Economy Rate: 5.86
Prasidh Krishna ended as India's highest wicket-taker among pacers in the series with five scalps.
He consistently troubled England’s batters with extra bounce and good pace. Even though he conceded runs while attacking for wickets, overall he managed to scalp 5 wickets at an economy rate of 5.86.
Axar Patel - 6.5/10
Runs: 60, Matches: 3, Average: 30.00 , SR: 100.00
Wickets: 5, Matches: 3, Economy Rate: 5.48
Axar Patel once again proved his value as a genuine all-rounder in the IND vs ENG ODI series. He scored an unbeaten 57 in the opening ODI and also picked up four wickets in the same game.
Across the series, he bowled economically while contributing useful runs in the lower order, but as one of the main all-rounders of the team, India would have expected better performance from him.
Shreyas Iyer - 6/10
Runs: 101, Matches: 3, Average: 33.67 , SR: 79.53
Shreyas Iyer produced one important innings during the IND vs ENG ODI series. His 66 off just 71 balls in the second ODI helped India recover after early wickets and kept them in the contest.
However, he failed to make an impact in the deciding match, getting dismissed for a duck. Overall, he was fairly consistent but could not convert his starts into bigger scores.
Jasprit Bumrah - 5.5/10
Wickets: 2, Matches: 2, Economy Rate: 4.00
Jasprit Bumrah played only two matches in the recent India vs England ODI series. He was ruled out of the third ODI match due to a left knee injury.
Overall, he picked up only two wickets despite maintaining an excellent economy rate of 4. It is important to mention that his absence in the final ODI was clearly felt as England’s batters dominated the Indian pace attack.
Washington Sundar - 5/10
Runs: 54, Matches: 2, Average: 54.00, SR: 79.41
Wickets: 0, Matches: 1, Economy Rate: 3.25
Washington Sundar impressed before an injury ended his series early. His unbeaten 52 in the opening ODI helped India complete the chase comfortably, while his off-spin kept things tight in the middle overs.
Unfortunately, a hamstring injury during the second ODI ruled him out of the remainder of the series. Additionally, he couldn't bag a wicket with the ball, Sundar gets 5 out of 10.
Gurnoor Brar - 4.5/10
Wickets: 4, Matches: 3, Economy Rate: 7.76
Runs: 25, Matches: 2, Average: 25.00, SR: 89.29
Gurnoor Brar showed his wicket-taking ability but struggled to control the scoring rate. The young pacer continued to trouble batters by picking up four wickets in three matches.
However, England's aggressive batting exposed his lack of experience as he leaked runs at an economy of 7.76.
Ishan Kishan - 2.5/10
Runs: 15, Matches: 2, Average: 7.50, SR: 75.00
Ishan Kishan received an opportunity after KL Rahul missed the second ODI due to illness. However, the left-handed batter could not make the most of his chances. He managed only one run in the 2nd ODI and failed to play a meaningful innings in the series decider.
KL Rahul - 2/10
Runs: 13, Matches: 2, Average: 6.50, SR: 118.18
KL Rahul had a disappointing series with the bat and managed just 13 runs across two matches and could not provide the finishing role expected from an experienced middle-order batter.
He did keep wickets well in the opening ODI, but his batting display was below expectations.
Shivam Dube - 1/10
Wickets: 2, Matches: 2, Economy Rate: 4.92
Runs: 0, Matches: 1, Average: 00.00, SR: 00.00
Shivam Dube featured in the first two matches but failed to make a significant contribution. He could not score any runs and managed only two wickets with the ball. Although he provides balance as a pace-bowling all-rounder, this series did not go his way.
Arshdeep Singh- 1/10
Wickets: 0, Matches: 1, Economy Rate: 7.20
Runs: 15, Matches: 1, Average: 15.00, SR: 250.00
Arshdeep Singh played only the final ODI and found it difficult against England's powerful batting line-up. He went wicketless and struggled to stop the flow of runs.
Despite this outing, his left-arm angle and ability to bowl variations continue to make him an important option for India.
Prince Yadav – 0.5/10
Wickets: 1, Matches: 1, Economy: 7.90
Prince Yadav got his opportunity in the final ODI and picked up the important wicket of Ben Duckett with a slower ball. While he showed glimpses of his talent, England’s aggressive batting made life difficult for the young pacer.
