England players who might have played their last T20I game [Source: AFP]
England played out of their skins to challenge India in the semifinal of the T20 World Cup 2026, but the Three Lions fell seven runs short of a historic run-chase at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. England needed a mammoth 254 to win the game and secure their final place, but the task was too big to overcome.
It was only Jacob Bethell who stood tall with a magnificent century and became the first England player to hammer a ton in the T20 World Cup knockouts. Apart from him, no one provided any support as the Three Lions crumbled under pressure.
Several England players underperformed throughout the tournament, and with the next T20 World Cup two years away, the English team could do with an overhaul, and here are 3 players who might have played their last T20 match for the nation.
1) Jos Buttler
One of the greatest T20 World Cup performers of all-time, Jos Buttler had a horrendous campaign, as the batter failed to deliver the goods despite England giving him full backing. He looked a pale shadow of his former self, and it was evident during the chase against India, when he couldn’t even touch a ball.
The top order batter has been a proven performer in T20Is, but against every opposition in this World Cup, he failed, and the stats reveal the story.
| Criterion | Data |
| Matches | 8 |
| Runs | 87 |
| Average | 10.88 |
| Strike rate | 116 |
(Buttler in T20 WC 2026)
- Who would have thought that a player of Buttler’s calibre would end the campaign with less than 100 runs? He amassed only 87 runs in eight matches, with an average of 10 and a strike rate of just 116.
- To win the World Cup, England needed Buttler to fire all guns blazing, but the player couldn’t do much as the pressure was constantly built on the middle-order batters.
- At 35, Buttler is not getting any younger, and perhaps the Three Lions should look for his replacement, and the former skipper should bid adieu to the format to concentrate on his 50-overs exploits.
2) Luke Wood
Luke Wood was preferred over Jamie Overton in the T20 World Cup, but just after a solitary game against Nepal, England realised that he is not the main man for the job.
The inexperienced Nepal batters took him down as he was hammered for 31 runs in 3 overs, as the Nepal side almost clinched the match. Since then, he warmed the bench as others were preferred over him.
Wood was picked on the side due to his exploits in the T20 franchise tournaments, but England dropping him after just one failure indicated that the left-arm seamer is not in their plans for the future, and he might have played his last T20I game for the team.

3) Jofra Archer
Jofra Archer was England’s premium pacer in the T20 World Cup squad, and it wouldn’t be unfair to say that he failed to live up to expectations. Against India, he was supposed to torment their openers, but Sanju Samson took him down with utmost ease.
| Criterion | Data |
| Matches | 8 |
| Dismissals | 11 |
| Economy | 9.53 |
(Jofra Archer in T20 WC 2026)
- Yes, he took 11 wickets in the tournament, but the economy rate of 9.53 reveals a story. He was used by Captain Harry Brook in the power play and in the death, and he was not useful in either situation. Against India, he conceded 61 runs in four overs as India targeted him with ease.
- Even against Nepal, he was taken down with ease. He is not a death overs specialist by any means, and the Three Lions should aim to replace him with someone who can deliver the goods in the slog overs.
Conclusion
England’s T20 World Cup campaign ended in heartbreak, and with that, several players have come under the firing line. With the next World Cup two years down the road, the England side needs a rebuild, and for that, they need to drop several players. The likes of Buttler, Archer, and Wood will feel the heat, and perhaps, they might have played their last T20 match for England.
